10 Indian Cars With Unexpectedly Worse Global NCAP Rating

In this day and age, where cars come with more power and more creature comforts, safety is usually overlooked when buying a vehicle. This is where safety had to be the prime priority. That said, how well a vehicle resists the impact entering the cabin is what matters. Although the crash test rating doesn’t always do justice to the vehicle’s caliber, it sure gives a fair idea of what it is capable of. Also, the crash test rating is cost-related. Meaning some vehicles that cost a fair amount may have a poor crash test rating. Well, for today we have 10 cars in the Indian market with unexpectedly worse Global NCAP crash test ratings.

  1. Maruti Suzuki S-Presso (0 -Stars)

    Maruti Suzuki S-Presso Scores Zero Start In Global NCAP

    Start with the vehicle that is by far one of the most versatile vehicles in its category. But because of the 0-star Global Crash test rating, it is not a car to recommend. Although Maruti Suzuki S-Presso comes with many safety features including, a driver-side airbag, and ABS with EBD, still it managed to only score a complete 0 in adult occupancy and 13.84 for child occupancy.

  2. Maruti Suzuki Eeco – (0 – Stars)

    Up next, is the Maruti Suzuki Eeco which also scored 0-stars in the Global NCAP crash test rating. Knowing the fact that many schools across India use Eeco as school transportation, 0-star does hurt. Moreover, the body shell was deemed unstable. For the adult occupancy, Maruti Eeco secured a score of 1.13 and for child occupancy, it got 24.20.

  3. Hyundai Verna* (0 – stars) (Latin NCAP)

    The crash test rating for Hyundai Verna came as a surprise as it scored a 0-star rating. Well, the rating was given by Latin NCAP, however, the vehicle tested was made in India. Hence, this gives us a fair idea of the structural integrity of one of the best-selling sedans in India. The vehicle tested at the facility came equipped with only a driver airbag vs the one in India which gets dual front airbags as standard.

  4. Hyundai Grand i10 (2 stars)

    Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS Scores 2 Stars in Global NCAP

    The next vehicle is also from the Korean carmaker Hyundai, the Grand i10. Global NCAP tested the Grand i10 Nios that came equipped with dual front airbags a couple of years back. Then, i10 managed to score 2 stars rating in the crash test with a score of 7.05 out of 17 and 15 out of 49 for adult occupancy and child occupancy respectively. Also, the bodyshell integrity was unstable.

  5. Maruti Suzuki Swift (2-stars)

    In 2021, Maruti Suzuki update one of the best-selling hatchbacks, the Swift. It got a new engine with more power. But is it safe? Well, the updated Swift carried the same platform, hence the results are likely to change. Speaking of the results, Maruti Suzuki Swift scored a disappointing 7.08 and 16.23 in adult occupancy and child occupancy. Additionally, the bodyshell was reported to be unstable.

  6. Hyundai i20 (3 – stars)

    One of the cars to get recently tested at the global NCAP is the Hyundai i20. Along with a couple of more cars, the Hyundai i20 managed to score a sad 3-star rating on the crash test. This premium hatchback got a max adult occupancy score of 8.84 and a child occupancy score of 36.89. Also, the i20 marginally scored a 3-star rating as it is a few points shy of a 2-star rating. Also, the body shell integrity is said to be unstable.

  7. Hyundai Creta (3 – stars)

    Hyundai Creta Global NCAP crash test rating

    The next vehicle to get tested in 2022 is the Hyundai Creta, which also secured a 3-star rating, but it is indeed disappointing. But why? One of the beloved cars in India, Creta only marginally scored 3 stars. Also, the adult, as well as child occupancy score, is even lower than its own sibling Hyundai i20. Creta got an 8 in the adult occupancy and a 28.29 in child occupancy with the body shell integrity being unstable.

  8. Kia Seltos (3-stars)

    The next vehicle on the list is the Kia Seltos which belongs to the same Hyundai family and shares the same platform as the above two cars. The 3-star rating was inevitable. Similar to Creta Seltos scored 8.03 which is just enough to get a 3-star rating. Nevertheless, Seltos wasn’t lucky enough to score 3 in child occupancy. This is where the SUV scored an even lower 15 out of 49. As expected, the bodyshell is unstable.

  9. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (3-stars)

    Global NCAP 2019 Crash Tests Results | Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

    Coming back to Maruti Suzuki, the most affordable yet practical MPV in India, Ertiga, scored a 3-star rating in the global NCAP. Though now not we’d like still better than most of the others. Ertiga got a decent 9.25 out of 17 in adult occupancy with a 25.16 score for child occupancy. Additionally, the Ertiga with unstable bodyshell came equipped with dual front airbags and other electronic aids.

  10. Renault Duster (3-stars)

    Renault Duster | Crash Test

    The last vehicle on the least with a rather disappointing crash test rating is the Global NCAP. Duster has always been an affordable SUV, but with the low crash test rating and declining sales will the compact SUV be able to conquer the market back? We think we a facelift yes. Till then the Duster remains to have the same platform scoring a 9 and 17.75 for adult occupancy and child occupancy respectively. Also, the bodyshell was reported to be unstable.
