10 Second Hand Used Cars To Definitely Avoid!

Cars are the second biggest expenditure one makes after buying a house. While most people buy new cars, some people prefer going for used cars. Buying a used car may seem practical and financially sensible as it is cheaper and helps avoid tax. Some enthusiasts go for them to save money there and later use it to modify their rides.

There are some things to keep in mind while buying a used car, such as it should have run less than 50,000 kilometres and preferably single owner. You should avoid buying demo cars and premium german, and it’s too. It is advisable to buy a second-hand vehicle which is not older than three years. If purchasing a used german car, the extended warranty is a must. Lastly, you should avoid buying cars from brands which left the country.

There are no issues with buying a used car until it is in excellent running condition and maintained well. But some vehicles need to be avoided in the second-hand market. Brands such as Volkswagen & Skoda manufacture performance cars which are expensive to maintain when new. So the used ones can cost you even more to maintain and get the spare parts.

Let’s look at the cars that you need to avoid in the second-hand market:

  1. Volkswagen Jetta (2007-2011)

If you are going for a second-hand car, it is better to avoid performance & premium cars. Volkswagen cars are reliable without a doubt, but a used VW such as Jetta can be high maintenance. Except that the spare parts are also not easy to find. One can discover german cars for a low price in the second-hand market, but then the dash will light up like Christmas lights.

If you have the mind & money to maintain a used german car, you can go for a VW Polo, preferably manual, as the DSG is also known to have some issues along with low fuel efficiency.

  2. Tata Aria (2010-2017)

The Tata Aria was a good package with essential features, and it made Hexa what it is right now. But it was not one of the very reliable cars. Tata did introduce a lot of features along with it, but it was never a success. So why go for something which was not even sold when new. Tata worked on the weak points and improved with the Hexa, which the people loved.

  3. Mahindra TUV300 AMT (2015-2021)

TUV300 & KUV100 are the two Mahindra cars with a not so good sales record. Despite offering good features and a package, they never really caught up. While the manual version is refined, the TUV300 AMT is not recommended to spend money on.

This might be the only car from Mahindra that does not keep the brand’s reliability up to the mark. TUV300 did have some issues initially, and the AMT transmission was also problematic, but Mahindra worked upon them all and recently introduced the Bolero Neo.

  4. Skoda Superb 1.8 TSI DSG (2009 – 2014)

Much like the parent brand, Skoda cars are also high performance & high maintenance. We only see enthusiasts buying used Skoda & VWs as they have a thing to maintain & modify these cars. While it packs good power & performance, the service feedback is not good, and the gearbox is also problematic. In the end, a used Skoda will be high maintenance along with difficult to find parts that empty the wallet.

  5. Fiat Linea (2008-2011)

Linea was a perfect car, but since Fiat left India, it is not advisable to go for any vehicles in the second-hand market. Even when the vehicle was on sale, there were issues with the parts, so one can imagine the current scenario after Fiat left India.

  6. Honda CRV (2007-2013)

While Honda cars such as City & Civic are popular in the second-hand market, the CRV might not be wise. Depending on the condition, you might get this car for as little as ₹3-5 lakhs, but getting a ₹20lakh+ vehicle for this amount can never be a good deal.
You can imagine how expensive the spares & repairs can be hard on the pocket with an old car.

  7. Chevrolet Captiva (2008-2012)

Chevrolet also left India a while back like Fiat; although Captiva was a spacious car with a good road presence, buying a used one is not wise. Captiva had some issues with the transmission and the engine, particularly the turbo-charger. All of these are significant expenses. Some service centres are still running, but the parts are hard to get.

  8. Nissan Teana (2007-2014)

This car might seem tempting with the good looks and luxury, but they come with a price. Nobody wants an inconvenient & troublesome ownership experience, and that is what you exactly get with a second hand Teana. The car is good, but again the maintenance and parts will be hard on your wallet.

  9. Honda Accord 3.5L V6 (2008-2013)"Honda

The Honda Accord is also among the luxury cars from Honda. Usually, Honda cars are reliable, but there is always an exception. The 2017 Accord V6 is known for errors such as ignition failures, faulty climate control & radio.
This Accord was also prone to high vibrations & high oil consumption making the maintenance even more difficult with minor oil leaks and overall making this not a wise choice as a second-hand car.

  10. Hyundai SantaFe (2011-2017)

Hyundai cars function well as city cars, but the premium ones do not have good support. Hyundai cars such as Santa Fe, Tucson & Sonata should be avoided at all costs. While we only see European premium vehicles in the list to avoid, Hyundai’s support for premium vehicles does not have a good record.

  11. Mitsubishi Outlander (2008-2013)

    Mitsubishi Outlander 2008

Similar to other brands which left India like Fiat, Chevrolet & Ford. Outlander was among the premium vehicles which were rare to sight even when on sale. So one can imagine that the owner is not easy, and now, when Mistsubihi left India, it is not advisable to buy a used Outlander until someone sourced the spares from abroad.

What is an Extended Car Warranty?

An Extended Car Warranty is basically an extra something you do to extend the life of your automobile. Just like you take health and life insurance for your loved ones, an extended car warranty will protect and enhance the life of your loved vehicle. Yes, you are provided with auto warranty services when you first buy the car, but what after those rosy days, months, or years are over? With time, machines need to be cared for more, just like us humans. An Extended Car Warranty is that loving patch you apply on your vehicle when it is out of its prime and glory years. In other words, the manufacturer’s warranty.
