5 BS4 Engines That Won’t Make A Comeback With BS6 Compliance

With the new BS6 emission norms in place, many companies were forced to either port older engines into BS6 or make new engines to comply with the norms. This resulted in many BS4 engines to be retired. Here is a list of 5 such engines that were some of the more powerful engines and won’t be coming back.

  1. Volkswagen 1.2L TSI

    Making its debut in the Volkswagen Polo it completely transformed the image of a hatchback. Outputting 108bhp it made Polo a powerhouse for a hatchback. The 1.2L BS4 engine was paired with a 7 speed DSG gearbox.

  2. Maruti Suzuki 1.0L Boosterjet

    This BS4 engine was a three-cylinder turbocharged engine and was pretty light and compact. It produced 102bhp and was only available in the Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS. Its still one of the powerful hatchbacks Maruti has offered.

  3. Hyundai 1.6L VTVT

    The naturally aspirated 1.6L engine present on the Verna produced around 120bhp. This engine made Hyundai Verna the most powerful compact sedan in its segment. After a successful push with Verna, Creta got the same engine.

  4. Fiat 1.3L Multijet

    One of the best diesel engines in India, the Fiat 1.3L Multijet found itself in over 21 cars. From Fiat Punto to Tata Zest and Maruti Suzuki Swift. The engine was in over 800K units sold. An economical engine, it was manufactured for over 2 decades.

  5. Ford 1.0L EcoBoost

    The 1.0L powered Ford Ecosport and was capable of 123bhp and 170Nm and was the winner of multiple Engine of the Year award. it was however discontinued because of the demand for the Subcompact SUV was not enough. it was yet a really strong engine that won’t be getting a BS6 counterpart.

The BS6 norms were made mandatory from April 1st 2020 and with some leniency to sell BS4 cars after the lockdown due to coronavirus ends.
