5 Reasons The Skoda Slavia Can Be A Game-Changer Sedan

We all know that the growing trend towards SUVs, Compact SUVs in particular, is causing a lot of stir. Other types of cars, no matter how good they are, are not getting enough credit, and because of this, the curve is very non-linear. The SUVs continue to dominate the sales charts, along with small hatchbacks and sedans that have become a thing of the past. However, Skoda hopes to breathe some fresh air into the sedan segment with its new product. Here are five reasons why the Skoda Slavia can be a game-changer sedan.

  1. Heavy Localisation

The number one reason why Skoda is betting big on the Slavia is the amount of heavy localisation. Skoda claims almost 95% of the materials are locally sourced, which should help bring the pricing as well as maintenance costs low. The same gambling has worked very well for Skoda before, and we have seen how Kushaq is reviving the entire brand in India. This we feel is a bigger gamble as the Kushaq is an SUV, and with the ongoing trend, you can say Skoda is riding the wave, but with the Slavia, it is entirely different. It is going against the tide and expecting to change the trend itself towards sedans. If this happens, there is no doubt that we will be one of the happiest to see the sedan segment being revived, as if back from the dead.

  2. Engine

The second reason why the Skoda Slavia can be a game-changer sedan is because of the engine options it comes with. Skoda has given us the official confirmation that the Slavia will be powered by two turbo-petrol engines, and there will be no diesel engine on offer. These engines will be the same as seen on the Skoda Kushaq, which means it will be either a 1.0-litre TSi or a 1.5-litre TSi. The 1.0-litre TSi is the smaller engine that puts out 110bhp and 175Nm of power and torque, respectively, while the 1.5-litre TSi churns out a healthy 148hp and 250Nm of power and torque. While the bigger engine definitely has the power advantage, according to reviews of the Skoda Kushaq, the smaller 1.0-litre TSi is, the peppier one, and we believe it is tuned that way. Either way, we are sure these engines will make more sense on a sedan, and we are yet to see how they perform on one.

  3. Features

Just like on the Kushaq, you can expect the Slavia also to be tech-savvy and loaded to the brim with features. The interior gets a dual-tone colour scheme, an 8-inch virtual cockpit, a two-spoke steering wheel, and a brand new 10-inch infotainment system, unlike the one seen on the Kushaq. The steering wheel will be leather-wrapped and gets a chrome scroller and inserts around the controls. The Skoda Slavia can be a game-changer sedan for bringing premium interiors at an affordable price, and it also gets ambient lighting as well as an electric sunroof which seems to be a national demand now.

  4. Safety

The Skoda Kushaq is not crash-tested by any governing body like the Global NCAP or Latin NCAP, but Skoda is confident that the MQB A0 IN platform that the Kushaq and Slavia share is very rigid and safe. Apart from this, there is a huge list of passive safety features like brake disc wiping, ASR, 3-point seatbelts for all rear passengers, ASR, Multi-Collision braking, MSR, six airbags, TPMS, HHC, ABS with EBD, and traction control.

  5. Competition

Well, the sedan segment as a whole might be seeing a dip in the market, but the new Honda City and Hyundai Verna are trying their best to impress potential buyers. Other competitors like the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Volkswagen Vento somehow manage to stay alive. This is why within the segment, the Skoda Slavia has a lot of potential to lead the pack. But, when you consider the price range, which we expect between 12-17 lakhs, similar to the Kushaq, Skoda will face stern competition from the SUV segment. It better be mighty good for customers to choose the Slavia over a whole bunch of SUVs that not only have more ground clearance but also better road presence.

Skoda is planning to launch the Slavia within a month, and we have already seen spy shots of units reaching dealership yards. We know that the Skoda Slavia has the potential to be a game-changer sedan, but will the people also think the same? This is something we will have to wait and watch when the Slavia goes on floor pretty soon. Let us know what you feel in the comment section below.
