7 Powerful BS6 Diesel & Petrol Engines In 2020

“Aerodynamics are for people who can’t build engines!” A powerful engine can easily deal with the opposite forces unless you are a race car driver. Then you’ll need your car to be aerodynamically correct too. India since the advent of the automotive industry saw many automakers across the globe making their presence felt in the market with some really powerful engines. Let’s take a look at 7 such powerful workhorses. All the engines mentioned below are BS6-compliant.

  1. Hyundai’s 1.0-Litre Kappa Turbo GDi (Petrol)

With the introduction of the Hyundai Venue, the Indian audience was introduced to the company’s most compact turbocharged engine, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. The engine is capable of producing 117hp of power @6,000rpm and a peak torque of 172Nm @4,000rpm. Hyundai is offering this engine with a lot of models now. The turbo-petrol engine is currently powering the Venue, Grand i10 Nios, Aura, Creta 2020, and many more from the manufacturer.

With the introduction of Revo-family of engines, Tata introduced a few of the meanest cars present on the roads at present. Powering the Tata Nexon, this diesel engine is capable of producing 108.4hp of power @1,750-4,000rpm and 260Nm of torque @1,500-2,750rpm. The turbo lag is minimal and the engine really proves to instil the thrill whenever you put your foot on that pedal.

Seltos has been thoroughly welcomed and has become the best selling SUV in no time. But it’s not just the features that have attracted a lot of customers. Kia’s 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine is capable of producing over 138hp of power and a 242Nm of peak torque. This engine is currently available in the GT line of Seltos.

The Kryotec 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine currently powers the Tata Harrier SUV. India’s favourite sedan, the Honda City is powered by the company’s most-sought-after 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine. It is capable of producing 118hp of power @6,600rpm and 145Nm of torque @4,600rpm. This engine is not only known for a decent performance but also for the excellent fuel efficiency it provides. Paired with a CVT, this engine can cover 18kms in a litre of fuel. The major reason, this engine has been loved so much is the high rpm capacities which are not common in a petrol engine.

VW was one of the first manufacturers to introduce small turbocharged petrol engines to India. Following the BS6 compliance rules, VW has introduced a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine capable of oozing out 113hp of power and a peak torque of 200Nm. It will be powering cars like Skoda Rapid, VW Vento and Polo in the near future.

One of the most powerful engines from Mahindra is yet to come alive. The Stallion engines will soon be added to the list when the first model, XUV300 powered with the mill will be launched. We lost some really powerful engines to the BS6 transition, a small price to pay for salvation though. Let us know your favourite engine in the comments section below.

Note that these engines have been chosen as they are available with the cars that are affordable otherwise we have V6 and V8 engines powering a few luxury cars too.
