A Comprehensive Guide To Motorcycle Riding Safety Gear

Any vehicle on road requires safety, especially motorcycles. Safety doesn’t require any experience number but wearable gear. Be it a couple of months of experience or a couple of years every, one ought to take safety seriously. Investing in riding safety gear complements itself. Though they are expensive but not more than a person’s life.

Surely after buying a motorcycle, you’ll be going on rides, some long, some short, some for leisure and some for adventure. Every ride should complement riding gear, as problems don’t first knock at the door.

Before buying riding gear, people have many questions, like what exactly to look for. Do I need one? Style over Material? Function over Fit?

Let’s look into the protective riding gear for motorcycles and answer all the questions.

Helmets

The Helmets are important out of all the safety riding gears. It protects our heads, and yes, you know, without a head, we are dead. Do you need one? is this a question to ask? Yes, of course, you need a helmet. Considering which one to buy? here are four types of helmets.

  1. Full Face Helmet

    • This is the type of helmet that’ll give the most amount of protection to your head.
    • The whole head is covered, and it” protect even the lower part of the head.
    • The eye protection department will have a visor that can be lifted to get a better experience of fresh air.
    • The helmet’s visor comes in several colours and tints. Tints like transparent, Dark black, and Mercury with different shades.

    • If you need a helmet with a large opening with the most protection, this is the helmet for you.
    • The helmet boasts a full-face design with a flip-up front. The whole front side of the helmet, including the visor, lifts with a button.
    • Lifting the front adds the ease of wearing and taking the helmet out.
    • Similar to the full-face helmet, this also has various visor colour options.
  3. 3/4 Face Helmet

    • A 3/4 face helmet will protect the head but doesn’t offer full coverage.
    • Unlike the full-face helmet, the front of the helmet is open, and the only wind protection is the visor.
    • Apart from the protection, the helmet also has very poor wind and dirt protection.
    • Similar to the other helmets, this also gets a variety of visor colour options.
  4. 1/2 Face Helmet

    • The least favourable and least favourite helmet is the 1/2 Face Helmet.
    • As the name suggests has, only the top of the head protected.
    • Usually, this helmet is used on scooter riders as they don’t go fast. Still, this type of helmet is not preferred at all.

In the end, it is recommended that everyone should wear a “Full Face Helmet” for maximum protection. Other helmets aren’t that safe.

Jackets

After the helmet, next comes the riding jacket. Riding jackets protect the rider’s upper body. The riding jacket is responsible for protecting the shoulders, elbows, back, and chest depending upon the type of jacket. Similar to the helmet, the types of jackets are.

  1. Full All-Weather Jacket

    • This jacket offers protection to the whole upper body, including all the above-mentioned body parts.
    • Be it winter or summer, a Full All-Weather Jacket has got it covered. It comes with detachable layers.
    • The layers can be detached if the weather is cold and attached those layers for cold temperatures.
    • An all-weather jacket is made up of either leather or synthetic materials.
    • The jacket boasts a silicon-type protector on all the essential parts.
  2. Conventional riding jacket

    • A conventional riding jacket is similar to all-weather jackets in terms of protection minus weather protection.
    • Similar to an all-weather jacket, this jacket is also made up of either leather or synthetic material.
    • This type of jacket comes with either single weather protection or a wind sheeter to make it water-proof.
  3. Body Armor

    • The body armour just protects the rider from scratched and has no type of weather protection whatsoever.
    • The jacket is made up of a mesh-like material that can be worn on normal clothes.

Be it a small ride or a long one; a riding jacket always adds a point to the safety of the rider or the pillion.

Pants are one of the most ignored riding gear. Most motorcycle riders assume that wearing jeans is enough while riding. On the other hand, riding paints are specially designed for this purpose.

  • Like the riding pants, these too are made up of different materials. The materials include leather, denim, kevlar, and synthetic material.
  • These pants are designed as a second layer so that they come over existing shorts or regular pants.
  • Riding pants either come in a set with a riding jacket or can be purchased additionally. Some jackets are compatible with their riding pants counterparts.
  • The basic design of such riding pants depends upon the purpose.
    • Some jackets come with a waterproof layer.
    • Pants with additional shin and knee protection for aggressive riders (For cornering).

To find a perfect set of riding pants, one should go and try for themselves and buy a size larger than usual pants. This way, the pants will be effortless to wear for long rides.

Racing Suits

Riding or racing suits are one of the most advanced riding gear. A racing suit is designed to keep speed and safety in mind. Some of these racing suits have high-tech devices and circuits integrated into them to note all the physical conditions the driver experiences.

  • Unlike the other riding gear, the racing suits are manufactured only of leather. As it is a good heat insulator, the friction on the outer surface is less. This leads to sliding in the case of a motorcycle fall.
  • The racing suit is a jumpsuit in which the upper body-guards for shoulders, back, and elbow, as well as the lower body-guards for knee and shin, are integrated into one piece.

 Boots

Riding boots are many a time misunderstood by trekking boots. Though they are different and, for sure, have different purposes.

  • Boots for riding a motorcycle are designed for one purpose in mind. The boots come with a metal boot tip to protect the rider’s toe.
  • These also have dedicated protection on the left boot so change the gears of the motorcycle.
  • The boots are made with a high top to support the rider’s heel in case of an accident.
  • These also are made up of different materials. The most prominent material is leather.

  • Similar to the rest of the gear, the types of riding boots depend upon the purpose.
    • Boots for long rides are embraced by laces for protection.
    • Motor-cross boots solve the purpose of off-roading, keeping dirt protection and rugged use in mind.
    • The most expensive are the racing boots which come with strong harnesses instead of laces.

Boots are often ignored, though; for riding enthusiasts, it’s, more than just riding gear.

Gloves

The most common riding gear after a helmet is a pair of gloves. They protect our hands more than we can imagine. In case of an accident, our hands are the first ones to touch the ground.

  • Riding gloves provide additional protection to fingers, knuckles, and palms.
  • The material of gloves includes kevlar, cotton, synthetic material, and leather.
  • Depending upon the use, the gloves are of different types. These include
    • Motorcross gloves for water and dust protection along with protection of fingers.
    • Racing gloves of more aggressive riding.
    • Touring gloves are well ventilated, preventing sweating during long rides.

Ignoring proper riding gear can have really bad consequences. On the other hand, riding a motorcycle with all the gear is itself an amazing experience.
