10 Automotive Terms (Jargons) Simplified and Explained | Part 1

Automotive jargons and technical words are difficult to comprehend at times. Agreed.

But it doesn’t have to be that difficult. We believe that if you love cars then that be it. Don’t let heavier than ever terms and complex terminologies you down. Cars and automotive is a passion for everyone. If you just love a roaring V8 going past you or if a car’s design makes you want to look at it again. That’s your passion for cars.

So, we are here to simplify some of the automotive jargons that might boggle your mind at the first time but aren’t that difficult.

1. All Wheel Drive (AWD)

When you hear the term “AWD” or “all-wheel drive”, it is basically referring to the drivetrain of the car. An all-wheel-drive car is the one in which the power is provided to all the wheels of the car. There are essentially two kinds of AWD drivetrains that are manufactured.

The part-time AWD mechanism delivers power to the four wheels of a car only if and when needed. However, a full-time AWD delivers the power to all the four wheels, the entire time.

2. Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT)

The automatic manual transmission is also known as a semi-automatic transmission. It is an automatic gearbox which does not change gears automatically. However, it works by facilitating manual gear changes without actually depressing the clutch pedal. In layman terms, it can be said to be a combination of a manual and automatic transmission, as the name suggests.

3. Air Fuel Ratio (A/F Ratio)

Air fuel ratio is the ratio or the parts of air and the fuel delivered to the engine to complete the combustion process. It is an important aspect of measuring an engine’s efficiency and is expressed in mass. A/F ratio should be in proportionate quantity in order to prevent loss of power or emissions.

4. Airbag Control Module (ACM)

The airbag control module is a small computer device in the airbag system. It is a device which helps your car to know when to deploy the airbags for use. The airbag control module is a smart device and has data stored in it.

During a collision, it tries to extract data from all the other components of the car to decide if the accident is grave enough to release the airbags.

5. Automatic Climate Control

The automatic climate control system of a car is simply an automatic air conditioner. The ACC system allows a driver to set a preferred temperature in their cars and let it remain there.

After setting the temperature, the driver has nothing to worry about, as the sensors determine the temperature in the vehicle. These sensors then bring the temperature to as preferred by the occupants of the vehicle.

6. Air Conditioning (A/C)

Air conditioning or A/C is a system present in your car used to cool the air down. The A/C system in your car works similarly to your room’s A/C as required.

7. Ambient Air Temperature (AAT)

The ambient air temperature is the air temperature of the air surrounding the car. It is essentially a sensor, situated in the car behind the bumper of the car. The main job of the sensor is to derive the outside temperature for the occupants of the car. Although, if put simply, it is a temperature monitoring device.

8. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)

This is one of the most common words out there. ABS or the anti-lock braking system is a standard feature in almost every car nowadays. The main job of the ABS system is to prevent locking up the tyres while braking, in order to retain the traction of the car.

The ABS system works by braking the tyres in cadence in order to avoid complete braking. It prevents your vehicle to skid from the road.

9. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

The Continuously Variable Transmission is a kind of automatic transmission in your car. CVTs are a recent development from automatic transmissions. While an automatic transmission comes with a set of gears for each speed and based on acceleration, a CVT remains constant. This means that a driver wouldn’t have to shift gears based upon their speed.

In simpler terms, a CVT transmission is a simpler version of the automatic transmission with minimal shifting.

10. Multi-Point Fuel Injection

Multi-point fuel injection is a way of injecting fuel into the engine. It is a method of injecting fuel into the combustion engine through multiple ports rather than a centralized pipe. This multi injection of fuel makes the engine more responsive during acceleration or acceleration.
