Best SUVs In India Under ₹20 Lakhs

It’s been a while since SUVs have taken over the Indian market, leaving segments such as hatchbacks & sedans behind. Every manufacturer has launched their product to compete in the growing market. With plenty of options to choose from, it can get confusing; here we are with the best SUVs in India under ₹20 lakhs:

  1. Mahindra Scorpio-N

    This is the latest product from Mahindra, which was awaited by a wide audience. Launched last month, it is one of the most promising SUVs in the market. It has a wide price range with an impressive package & new features. Apart from the new tech, such as the Adrenox-powered infotainment system, it also gets the new Penta-link rear suspension. It is available in both 6/7-seater layouts with captain seats for the 6-seater version.

    It gets similar engines as the XUV700, with the 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine that makes 203hp & 370Nm. While the 2.2-liter diesel engine is available in two tuning states, a standard version churns out 132hp & 300Nm torque, and a performance version that makes 175hp & 370Nm torque. These are mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, with an automatic torque converter also on offer. It has a price range from ₹11.99-19.49 lakhs ex-showroom.

  2. Mahindra XUV700

    This was the ultimate SUV in the market till Mahindra launched the Scorpio-N. It shares some elements with the SUV mentioned above but is better equipped with modern features such as ADAS. Unlike Scorpio-N, it is a FWD monocoque car with more convenience features.

    It is available with the same engines; the petrol engine makes 200hp & 380Nm torque while the diesel engine churns out up to 185hp & 450Nm torque. It has the same transmission options but gets features such as the 10.25-inch digital driver’s display & ADAS features like lane keep assist and, adaptive cruise control & AEM braking. XUV700 has a price range from ₹13.18-25.58 lakhs ex-showroom.

  3. Volkswagen Taigun

    This VW’s candidate in the growing SUV market, this European car is the whole package with two engine options and practical features. It has a digital cockpit and one of the best interiors compared to the competitors. Taigun also has cylinder deactivation technology to enhance fuel economy and even a GT-line version.

    It is powered by 2 turbocharged petrol engines; the smaller 1.0-litre TSI engine makes 115hp & 178Nm torque while the 1.5-litre TSI engine churns out 150hp & 250Nm torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, and the smaller engine gets the automatic torque converter while the bigger gets the 7-speed DSG. It has a price range from ₹11.4-18.6 lakhs ex-showroom.

  4. Tata Safari

    This is the latest generation of the Tata Safari, which originally is a legendary SUV icon in India with a wide fanbase. It is a FWD car, unlike the predecessor, and does not pack the same offroading potential. It is equipped with new modern features such as the panoramic sunroof & connected car tech, and it is also available with both 6/7-seater layouts.

    Safari is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine churning out 170hp & 350Nm torque mated to a 6-speed manual/automatic transmission. Tata might also bring out a petrol version along with AWD in the future. It is equipped with an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 9-speaker JBL sound system & 6-way powered driver’s seat. It has a price range from ₹15.25-23.56 lakhs ex-showroom.

  5. Tata Harrier

    It is a 5-seater midsized SUV like a shorter wheelbase version of the Safari. It has been around since 2019 on the Indian roads and has an excellent road presence and a good interior. Harrier is also available in Dark & Kaziranga versions with their respective cosmetic updates.

    It is powered by the same 2.0-litre diesel engine as the Safari, with a 6-speed manual as standard along with a 6-speed torque converter on offer. It is equipped with features such as a panoramic sunroof, dual-tone alloy wheels & rain-sensing wipers. It has a price range from ₹14.65-21.95 lakhs ex-showroom.

  6. Mahindra Thar

    If you are an offroading enthusiast, then this can be the best pick for you. Mahindra’s other SUVs, such as Scorpio-N & XUV700, can also take rough terrains with their respective AWD variants, but Thar is built to wander & explore places without roads. It was a legendary icon in India and the most loved offroader in the country since the first generation in 2010.

    Mahindra launched the generation update with the 2020 Thar offering a petrol engine and automatic variants too. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine makes 150hp & up to 320Nm torque, while the 2.2-litre diesel engine churns out 130hp & 300Nm torque. It gets 4×4 with both powertrains and new features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, halogen headlamps with LED DRLs & a digital MID in the instrument cluster. Thar has a price range from ₹13.53-16.03 lakhs ex-showroom.

  7. Jeep Compass

    The last SUV on our list is the Jeep Compass; it is the most successful product from the American manufacturer in India. Jeep has also launched the Meridian, derived from the Compass. It is an updated 7-seater version of the Compass. It gets both petrol & diesel engines with AWD limited to diesel versions.

    The 1.4-litre petrol engine makes 163hp & 250Nm torque, while the diesel engine churns out 172hp & 350Nm torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual as standard with a 7-speed DCT for the petrol version & a 9-speed automatic for the diesel. It is equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, connected car tech, digital driver’s display, powered tailgate & a 360-degree camera.
