Convert Your Old Car’s Number Plate Into BH Series Number Plate

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has recently passed a new amendment allowing the conversion of regular vehicle registrations into the recently introduced BH (Bharat Series) number. This movement is being conducted to widen the BH series ecosystem.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highway said, “Vehicles currently having regular registration mark can also be converted to BH Series registration mark, subject to payment of requisite tax, to facilitate persons who subsequently become eligible for BH series registration mark,”

What is a BH series Number Plate?

  • The BH Series Number was first introduced in September 2021 for personnel with transferable jobs. Initially, this provision was only extended to new cars.
  • The BH Series Number plates were only available for defence personnel, central government/state government employees, and central and state public sector undertakings (PSU) employees.
  • BH Series Number Plates removes the hassle of re-registering a vehicle when a person with a transferable job moves to another state, as it is valid throughout the country.

How to apply for a BH Series Number Plate?

  • It is Mandatory for every state authority to verify the owner’s details before granting the application.
  • Anyone who wants to apply for the BH series can easily log into the Vaahan portal and select any automobile dealer near his/her vicinity.
  • The selected dealer has to fill out a form on the Vaahan Portal on behalf of the owner.
  • People working in the private sector must present a Working Certificate from their employer and form 60, available on the Vaahan Portal.
  • It was earlier proposed that only new vehicles could be eligible for the BH series. But. Now even vehicles of all ages can procure a BH series number plate.

Is the BH series number plate expensive?

  • Well, it depends upon your car; for instance, if your vehicle costs below 10 lakhs, you only have to pay 8% of the total vehicle cost.
  • If your vehicle is above the 20 lakh range, you must shun 12% of your vehicle cost as road tax.
  • Vehicles between the 10-20 lakh bracket get charged 10% of the total vehicle cost.
Note: The above-mentioned prices are the proposed prices that will apply after this law is added and processed.

What are the Advantages of the BH Series?

  • It makes the state-to-state transfer easy, as the owner is not required to re-register and pay the road tax for his vehicle.

  • The road tax for BH series cars is for a minimum of two years or in multiples of two, based on the amount of time the owner wishes to spend in the state.

    When we have already paid life time state tax. Govt can give relaxation on the amount already given and also vehicle dealer is not our friend to help us in FREE.

    • Hi Shelesh,

      As per the current proposed amendment, you will be liable to pay the road tax again, as your vehicle will have to be re-registered again into the national vehicle database. As per the current update, there is no provision on whether the already-paid taxes will be reimbursed or not.

  7. I have recently purchased 2015 Renault lodgy do i have provision to convert to BH series? I have not changed state , purchased from same city . Should I have to pay once again road tax

If one has a particular state’s number plate and wants to change to Bharat Number plate, should he pay road tax as mentioned above, in which case one will end up paying road tax twice or one has to pay only the difference between what one has paid and the rates mentioned above. What happens when the state’s road tax is less than the rates mentioned above?

    • Hi Mr Swaminathan,

      As per the proposed amendment, all vehicles applying for a BH number plate will have to be re-registered again. This means that you will have to pay the road tax again as per the % mentioned in the article. However, the % mentioned is just tentative and might differ from the actual % once it is added to the law.

      – Address proof
      – Ministry-issued ID card (Govt. employees)/ Working certificate (PRivate Sector employees)
      – Old/New vehicle documents
      – Form 20 (Govt. employee)/ Form 60 (Private sector employees)

      Yes, you are eligible to obtain a BH series number plate. All govt. Employees must submit the application along with their office/ministry-issued id cards. To apply you must download the Vaahan app and submit form 60 with all the required documents.

    I have Royal Enfield continental GT 535 and the registration is from DL (Delhi) number plate. I got the NOC for Bihar state however I didn’t register my bike in new state Bihar. Can I get the BH number for my bike as I want to use my bike in Telangana state. Please suggest.

      Yes, you can surely apply for a BH series number plate. Additionally, having a BH series number plate will prevent the hassle of getting your bike re-registered every time you move or get transferred to a new state.

  25. Old cars with state numbers can they be converted to BH? If yes how and what’s needed to do that?

      Cars of any age/ new or second hand can obtain a BH series number plate. You can apply for it via the Vaahan application, and as per the latest update, all govt. employees are liable to submit their identity cards with form 20.

    The same will be chane of another Two wheeler ( Motor cycle & Scooty which was registered in Maharastra & Haryana.

Now, the answer to your second question will that the BH series number plate will be applicable throughout the country, and you won’t have to re-register your vehicle if you wish to move to any other state or have a transferable job.

  38. What will happen to the one time road tax already paid when vehicle was purchased, will we get the refund back from registered state ?

      According to the latest update. You will have to have pay 10% of our car’s total value as road tax for obtaining a BH series number plate. Request to head to your authorized RTO to know the total value of your car.

      you can obtain a BH series number plate for your current vehicle. Request you to head to your nearest RTO or any authorized dealer for physical assistance. You can also fill out the application online through the Vaahan portal. Now, coming to the second part of it being economical or not, This will only come in handy if you ever wish to relocate or have a transferable job.

      Yes, you can get a BH series number plate for your car. However, right now, there is no confirmation about the pricing as the amendment is still under process. However, according to our research, we have mentioned the proposed cost for obtaining the BH series number plate.

  60. As I’m the already registered with RTO and had paid one time tax if I want to go for BH series number why I have to pay 8%of more tax, what about my tax paid will that be adjusted?

      as per the amendment. Your vehicle will have to be re-registered under the national vehicle database. Additionally, there is no update on whether the already paid tax will be reimbursed or not.   61. I have 2 points to clarify
    1. Let’s say a private company employee has re-registered his old vehicle with a UP registration to a BH series registration. Can he claim a tax refund from the home state since the vehicle is no longer available in the same state.
    2. As I the existing state road tax slabs for old vehicles will still apply for bh series numbers so if a person stays in a different state he has to pay the road tax yearly . However , if he decides to stay in that state permanently does one have to convert the number back to that state registration.

      A1- No, it is not mandatory to get your BH series converted back to the state series. As once you have obtained the BH number plate, It will be applicable throughout India for the rest of its life.

    I work in a govt bank and i bought a second hand car from my colleague. Taken NOC from Maharashtra to get it registered in Andhra Pradesh. Docs not yet submitted in Andhra Pradesh RTO. Now to get BH series number on my name, what should I do?

  66. To convert from regular registration to BH they should allow with out any charges, already they paid amount for registration so if they removed more people can come forward to opt BH registration.

      Yes, you can surely apply for a BH series number plate as you happen to be a government employee. Request you download the Vaahan application and fill in the required details. Additionally, during the application process, it is mandatory for you to submit your ministry-issued ID card along with Form 60.

  69. I’m a Businessman/Cloth Merchant and I travel frequently to Gujarat, Surat and Ahmedabad, Maharashtra Mumbai and Tamilnadu.
    I face issue related to Regular Police Check and RTO asking the reason of visit and sometimes endup paying Challan.

    I own a 7 year old car in Delhi and I have plans of moving to Kolkata. I work in a private company and we have offices in more than 4 states in India. My query is as I have already paid the Road Tax for 15 years in Delhi will i get my money back from the DTO office or i shall have to pay extra to the West Bengal State in addition to what i have paid while buying the car as i would like to change the registration to BH series.

      As of now, there is no provision of whether the already paid tax will be reimbursed or not. You will have to pay extra to obtain the BH series number plate as your vehicle will have to be re-registered under the national vehicle database.

The owner has signed the papers for transfer of ownership. Whether I can buy this scooter or return it. Should I need to pay Karnataka road tax for getting the scooter in my name and can I get BH series number plate.

  84. If the vehicle is old, BH registration fee should also be less proportionatly. According to the life of the vehicle, there should be some provisions for deduction in BH registration fee. Otherwise the new vehicle and oldest vehicle’ owner have to pay same BH registration fee.
    The authorities are requested to consider this point and to include in the GOI orders.
