Let’s talk numbers

Car Sales in Q3 // Representation
  • Before coming to any kinds of conclusions, it is crucial to understand the number game. Even though the Covid-19 Pandemic slowed down the overall sales speed of vehicles in the past years, it also increased the individual’s dependence on private mobility which boosted the overall sentiment of bringing home a new car.
  • While most of the previous year went dry due to lockdown in several parts of the country, as and when the dust settled, sales showed quite a unique picture. If take the example of the Q3 (July to September) months, where sales numbers picked up quite a pace, the trend clearly showed that the Indian market is now totally mesmerized by the lust for having a bigger vehicle.
  • For the first time in the history of the Indian market, Q3 showed a clear fondness of the market towards SUVs.  According to the data sourced via SIAM, SUVs sold a total of 87,720 units in Q3, while the total number of hatchbacks and sedans sold together were 64,235 units. And not just Q3, even in Q2, where SUVs sold 3, 67,457 units, while aggregate sales of hatches and sedans stood at 3, 43,939 units.

  • The mindset of having more is quite unique to India, be it our aspirations or even family size, Indians are obsessed with having more. This obsession has clearly taken over the way Indians are now buying cars.
  • While hatches were once the best-selling segment in the automotive sector it seems as if the SUV craze has now engulfed the entire nation up to its throat. The craze of owning a hatchback is now lacking behind the charm of bringing home an SUV as the family’s first car. And the biggest reason behind this change is the fact that SUVs have now become more affordable than ever before.
  • The pros of having a commanding view of the road ahead, a much more spacious cabin, a boot that accommodates it all, and the diversity of owning an SUV/MUV, has overtaken even the budget constraints of typical buyers.
  • By spending just a few lakhs over and above what a budgeted hatchback costs, consumers are now getting spacious and powerful SUVs that are even off-road compliant and offer a larger wheelbase, and premium features onboard. Another reason behind the rampant growth of SUV/MUVs in India is the fact that for a little more money, SUV/MUVs can seat almost the entire family in sheer comfort; something that a hatch simply isn’t able to do.
  • Another factor associated with an increase in SUV/MUV sales is the fact that the Indian mentality considers a bigger car to be a better status symbol. The result is that even avid hatch lovers are bringing home SUVs to satisfy not just their needs but also of society. If given a chance what would you prefer? A hatchback, sedan, or an SUV?
