Car Companies left with a HUGE Inventory of Unsold BS4 Vehicles

1st April 2020 is closing in and carmakers in India still haven’t figured out on how to sell their old stock BS4 vehicle. The Supreme Court of India has made it clear that it won’t be pushing the deadline for the sale of BS4 vehicles. This has left car manufacturer with a massive inventory of old stock BS4 vehicles.

  • According to data collated by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), car dealer across India are left with 25 and 30 days worth of stock for two-wheelers and commercial vehicles at the end of January.
  • For passenger vehicles, this figure is between 15 and 20 days worth of old BSIV stock.
  • If left unsold, these old BS4 vehicles will be written off (scrapped) after 1st April 2020.

In an interview to ET, President of FADA, Mr Ashish Kale said: “We have requested the manufacturers that any BS-IV vehicles billed further, which are not against specific customer orders, should be on a returnable basis to avoid financial loss to dealers.”

According to Mr Kale, potential buyers are looking for diesel SUVs, and are waiting for manufacturers to announce the prices of their BS6 vehicles before making a decision.

Many are also delaying their purchase in hopes of steep discounts around March end when retailers may be forced to liquidate unsold inventory at a loss, he adds.
