6 Cars In India That Were Killed By Poor Marketing

The roads are clogged with automobiles. Automobiles that are good, gorgeous, powerful, iconic, and duds, as well as cars that are economical and feature cars. However, there is one type of car that all manufacturers strive for: successful cars. The sad issue is that not all car manufacturer’s vehicles make the list. A vehicle’s failure could be due to a variety of factors, the most common of which being inadequate marketing. So, after a lengthy search, we’ve identified six cars in India that were killed as a result of poor or ineffective marketing. Let’s get right to it.

Moving on, at times, because of poor marketing we do lose access to some really good and potent vehicles.

  1. Mahindra Alturas G4

Starting with Mahindra’s top of the line vehicle, Alturas G4. The brand’s flagship SUV Alturas G4 came to Indian’s shores in 2019. This full-grown SUV was manufactured to compete against the big boys, Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour and BMW X1. Speaking of Mahindra Alturas G4, it is one of the values for money options.

But because of the poor marketing, it was not able to sell in big numbers. Fun Fact: Mahindra recently took over the Korean carmaker Ssangyong and Alturas G4 is essentially the facelift of the Rexton, which was sold a while back.

  2. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

Back in the early 2000s, there were only two SUVs that were considered odd road king. Among the two, Mitsubishi Pajero had crows with itself. But a car gets outdated sometimes of the other. In 2012 comes the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Sure! the new Pajero Sport share the same capabilities as its older model, the lack of marketing killed a capable off-roader as well as the company.

We are not quite done with the SUVs yet, the next on the list that died of poor marketing was Tata Hexa. If you are not aware, Tata Aria and Aria both shared nearly identical body structures.

Nevertheless, it’d be safe to say that Tata Hexa was one of those capable SUVs that can go on long off-road trails and also is capable of munching miles out on the highway with ease. In the end, Hexa was discontinued in 2020 before the implementation of the BS6 emission norms.

  4. Maruti Suzuki Baleno Altura

The next vehicle on the list comes from Maruti Suzuki, a manufacturer that has almost always topped the sales rankings in India. There was a time when Maruti Suzuki was testing various vehicles for the Indian market. In the midst of this, the company unveiled the Baleno Altura, an unexpected vehicle. Maruti Suzuki Baleno was in itself a gorgeous looking sedan but adding to beauty was a station wagon.

Yes! if you are not aware, for some time Baleno Altura (station wagon) was a part of the Indian market. To be honest, station wagons never did good in the Indian market, but these vehicles are even more practical than SUVs when driving in the city. Sedan’s luxury with more than adequate boot space is what every station wagon screams. Adding more to low sales was poor marketing. Also, Altura was launched in the Indian market in 1999 and was discontinued in 2007.

Mahindra, an Indian automobile manufacturer, has always experimented with novel designs. The TUV300 was one of the budget vehicles to possess an RWD drivetrain. The TUV300, like the Quanto, had a transversely placed engine. This allowed the car to be driven by a rear-wheel-drive system.

Let’s pitch Mahindra TUV300 vs Bolero NEO | Same-Same Or Different?

Now called Bolero Neo comes powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo-diesel engine delivering power to the rear wheels. This motor has a maximum power output of 100 horsepower and a peak torque of 240 Nm. Mahindra also produced a TUV300 Plus at a later stage. Which was a full-grown SUV with six or seven seats. Both of the brand’s cars, however, were never given the required attention.

  1. Hi. I like your articles. But with this article, I would beg to differ. The TUV 300 was a flop not because of poor marketing. When Mahindra launched the TUV 300, they roped in Prabhas (fresh after the mega hot Bahubali). The TUV 300 is a classic marketing study case and shows that a bad product will not succeed even if you have the biggest stars endorsing it. The TUV 300 was launched with an old engine from Mahindra which under-powered the vehicle. By the time they provided the M hawk version, it was a bit too late and the Breeza had already won the market.

    • Hi Rajiv,
Yes, you are absolutely correct on the engine and the commercial part. But at the time of its launch, Mahindra TUV300 was powered by m80 mHawk engine. To be exact, this motor could generate peak power of about 83bhp and 230Nm of peak torque. And considering the condition, sure, it was a little low on power, but it was far from being underpowered. Now, the reason TUV300 is on our list is because of poor marketing. And with this vehicle by poor marketing, we after the way Mahindra marketed the TUV. To be honest, TUV300 (now Bolero Neo) is the true blue SUV in its segment which mostly contains cross overs. Hence, we think Mahindra should have boasted more about the capabilities and make people aware of what TUC300 exactly is. Hope it helps, Stay Pinned! 🙂

  2. I dont agree with you on alturas .. it is not marketing but the price at which it is sold is not what a consumer likes to spend on a Mahindra .
