Cars That Have Won The ICOTY Award In The Last Decade

Most of us prefer buying a car which is already selling in good numbers in the market. Among the best sellers, there are some cars that achieve great things in the initial phase of their sales in the market. The Indian Car of the Year award is given on a yearly basis to a newly launched vehicle. This trend was started in India in 2006 where Maruti Suzuki Swift won the first ICOTY award. The ICOTY 2021 is the new Hyundai i20. In today’s featured, we will go through 10 cars that have been the Indian Car of the Year in the past. Let’s begin!

    The second-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift won the ICOTY 2012. This hatchback has been among the top sellers in India since time immemorial. Well, as we mentioned at the starting of this article, we have already said that Swift was the one who won the Indian Car of the Year Award in 2006 for the first time when it was announced.     When Renault Launched this product in the Indian market, the Indian audience was absolutely in love with the product. This car gained swift success in the Indian market and just after scoring the title of Indian Car of the Year 2013, Renault Duster began gaining an absolutely great amount of sales. Duster was among the new cars which began taking over the SUV segment and in the present times too, the Renault Duster is selling well in its naturally aspirated and turbo form.

Starting in 2014, Hyundai started winning the ICOTY awards down the decade. For 2014, Hyundai’s Grand i10 won the award and we guess it was one of the best contenders that were there for the award. Well, Hyundai’s Grand i10 was definitely a good car and proved to be an absolute value for money hatch.

    In 2015, Hyundai brought in a major change to its already existing premium hatch. The Hyundai i20 was updated to be the Elite i20 and this hatch definitely got some major changes which made it live it up to its name. This version of the Hyundai i20 was really elite and therefore, it deserved the ICOTY award. A whole new look with a host of new features made the Hyundai i20, the ICOTY 2015.

    We told you, you will be seeing a lot of Hyundais on the list and here is another Hyundai that won the ICOTY award in 2016. Hyundai’s latest addition to the SUV segment, the Hyundai Creta stepped into the Indian market and gained an absolutely swift success where it was in huge demand from the first week of its launch! Creta was so successful that every other competitor in the market had to think about what they can do in order to beat or even match Creta’s sales.

  6. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (2017)

    Another one who took the trend of compact SUVs forward, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza was only available in a diesel variant back then. When BS6 came into existence, Maruti Suzuki decided to discontinue diesel and this is when Brezza was also launched in a petrol-only avatar. Here, we are talking about the diesel variant of the Brezza which won the ICOTY 2017. Just to let you know, this is the safest car that MSIL has manufactured till now.

    Another one from the Korean automaker that won the ICOTY award. After Hyundai discontinued the fluidic Verna, they made some major changes in the sedan and re-launched it in 2018 with a brand new front fascia and some added features.     The only name which you would see two times on the list. The Maruti Suzuki Swift has won the ICOTY award in every avatar that it has been launched. It won in 2006, in 2012 and once again in 2019, the third-gen Swift was awarded as the Indian Car of the Year in 2019. Be it the drastic change in the design elements or the addition of almost all the new-age features, everything together made it the ICOTY 2019!

    Although this premium hatch has received a lot of criticism for its pricing. Still, it managed to be the ICOTY 2021. The Hyundai i20 stands out in terms of design and tech.
