Just like the international market, it is good to see cars with a wide range of engine options. With those different engines, it is natural to get a wide variety of transmission options. Will these different transmission options be of any use to you? These different transmissions open up a broader spectrum of versatility.

It is obvious you’ll be getting the car depending upon your needs. With that getting a different transmission is a boon. So, without wasting any more time, here are the 10 cars in India that offer multiple transmission options.

  1. Hyundai Venue

    The car that started the trend of multiple transmissions is the Hyundai Venue. This cute smart little SUV gets a many engine and transmission options to choose from.

    • Among 3 engine options, the least powerful engine is a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, that pushes 83ps of max power and 113.7Nm of the peak torque. This engine comes with a 5-speed manual transmission.
    • A 1.0-litre 3 cylinder turbo petrol engine is also an option that gets the most number of transmission options. Talking transmission first, this engine gets 3 options to choose from, a 6-speed manual transmission, a 7-speed DCT automatic and a brand new 6-speed iMT gearbox. This engine puts out 120ps of max power and 172Nm of peak torque.

    • You can also choose a torquey engine, that is a 1.5-litre 4 cylinder turbo diesel that pushes 100ps of max power and 240Nm of peak torque. Sadly this engine only comes with a 6-speed manual transmission.

    Who doesn’t know that Hyundai is the parent company for Kia? Well, if not, now you know. With that said, both the companies share many major components, one such is the heart of the vehicle, ‘ the engine’. With that, they do obviously share transmission too.

    Transmission Options

    Engine 1.2-Litre Petrol engine 1.0-Litre Turbo GDI 1.5-Litre CRDi 1.5-Litre CRDi VGT

    • Yes! Kia Sonet also has an option of 1.2-litre naturally aspired petrol engine, that pushes the exact same power and torque figures as its brother, Venue. They do share the same engine too, that is a 5-speed manual transmission.
    • Kia is known for making good handling vehicles, Sonet is not different. Though Hyundai Venue and Sonet share the same engine, it is the Kia that is more enthusiastic. Talking about the engine, it is a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that makes 120ps of max power and 172Nm is peak torque. Unlike the Venue, Sonet only comes with 2 transmission options with this GDI engine, a 7-speed DCT and a 6-speed iMT no MT on offer.
    • Similar to the Hyundai, Sonet also gets the same engine that is a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. But the catch is, win the Kia this CRDi motor gets 2 different tunes. One with the same specs with 100ps of power and 240Nm of peak torque. The other one uses a VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) with the engine instead of fixed geometry. This allows the engine to make a bit more power and torque. That said, the lower-powered engine is mated to the same 6-speed manual transmission. But the one with VGT is only offered with a torque converter.
  3. Renault Duster

    Recently the very robust compact SUV, Duster was introduced with a new engine in its lineup. It didn’t replace the existing engine but was added in conjunction with the old one. With that, the duster also got a new transmission. Here are the details.

    Transmission Options

    Engine 1.5-Litre Petrol engine 1.3-Litre Turbo petrol
    Transmission 5-Speed Manual 6-Speed MT/ 7-Step CVT Automatic
    • A 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine powers the Renault Duster. This motor generates 106ps of peak power and max torque of 142Nm. With that, the SUV comes with only one 5-speed manual transmission.
    • Renault Duster finally came back into competition not because of features, but a new and supremely powerful engine. This engine is a 1.3-Litre turbo petrol engine, that puts out a massive 156ps of max power and 254Nm of peak torque. Thankfully this motor gets two transmission options, a 7-step CVT automatic and an exciting 6-speed stick shift.
  4. Nissan Kicks

    There are cars that pack a lot of punch and offer brilliant value for money, but still don’t make an impact. One such vehicle is the Nissan Kicks. Like its parent, Renault, Nissan also shares the same engine and transmission combination as the Duster.

    • 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine is something that is refined and offers decent power to this smart looking SUV. Talking about the numbers, Nissan Kicks produces 106ps of ma power and developed 142Nm of peak torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
    • Similar to Duster, Nissan Kicks was the first car to get the new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine. This gem of an engine produces identical max power of 156ps and 254Nm of peak torque. This engine comes with 2 engine options, a 6-speed manual and a 7-step CVT automatic.

The changes in this offroader are not limited to cosmetics but also get some serious equipment under the hood. Here are the 2 engines that come with 2 different transmission options. All the engines also get a 4X4 drivetrain option.

    Engine 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol engine 2.2-Litre Turbo Diesel

    • The talking point in new Mahindra Thar has to be the new 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. This powerful motor produces 150ps of peak power and generates 300Nm of peak twist with manual transmission and 320Nm with the automatic. Talking about the transmission, the SUV is offered with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed Torque converter.
    • Diesel counterpart is the more conventional engine, which is a 2.2-litre turbo diesel that makes 130ps of max power and 300Nm of peak torque. That said, it is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

    Another vehicle from the Koreans to have multiple engine and transmission options is the Hyundai Verna. Like some other offering from the brand, this one is no exception. In typical Hyundai fashion, the car is feature-packed, as well as good on performance and handling. Here what this Hyundai has on offer.

    • Amidst the new BS6 emission norms, Hyundai still offers a diesel engine in the sedan segment. That said, Verna comes with a 1.5-litre engine that produces 115ps of max power and 250Nm of peak torque. The motor is coupled with 2 transmission options, a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
    • A petrol engine is a prime choice with the sedan buyers and Hyundai has two of its engines. The first one is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine that makes the same power as its diesel counterpart but the peak torque is at 144Nm. Like the diesel, this also gets 2 transmission options, not the same though. A 6-speed manual and an IVT which is ideally a CVT transmission.
    • The most powerful engine of the low is the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, that makes 120ps of max power and 172Nm of peak torque. You only get an option of a 7-speed DCT transmission with paddle shifters for added sportiness.
  7. Hyundai Creta

    How can we talk about transmission and engine options without mentioning Hyundai Creta? Like Hyundai’s sedan Verna, Creta also gets a similar engine and transmission options. That said, Creta as an overall deal looks really promising, here’s how.

    Transmission 6-Speed Manual/IVT Automatic 7-Speed DCT/Automatic Torque Converter Automatic / 6-Speed MT
    • This time too Hyundai is sharing a couple of engines with its lineup from the ₹10-20lakh bracket. That said, 2020 Hyundai Creta comes with the same engine and transmission combo as Verna. The same 1.5-litre petrol engine with an option a manual and an automatic transmission.
    • The diesel engine is also identical in both the cars, with the exact same power and torque. Not just that, even the transmission is common between the duo.
    • It is the turbo petrol engine which is different from the Hyundai Verna. Finally, some difference, but in a negative way. Verna’s chassis was capable of the power and torque, and it could have made world of a difference. That said, at least an option would have been amazing. Well, let’s come back here, this 1.4-turbo petrol engine makes a mind-boggling 140ps and 242Nm of peak torque. This SUV also comes with only a 7-speed DCT automatic.
  8. Kia Seltos

    By now we know that the Koreans are fairly good when it comes to engine sharing. They have everything in their lineup for everyone. Kia Seltos one of the successful cars also are part of the same family. Like the other, this compact SUV gets a series of options.

    • Starting with the naturally aspirated engine, it shares the same components, from power to torque and even the transmission is a common factor between Creta and Verna. As said earlier it is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and an IVT automatic transmission.
    • How can we forget the diesel, the U2 CRDi engine is one gem of an engine. It is a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine similar to its other two counterparts. That said, it comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed torque converter.
    • Similar to Hyundai Creta, Seltos gets the same powerful 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine with the same power and torque figures. The difference arises in the drivetrain department. This SUV not only gets a 7-speed DCT automatic but it also comes with a 6-speed manual transmission with this enthusiast engine.
  9. MG Hector/ Hector Plus

    Surprisingly the Chinese owned British company has a place on this list. MG Hector with its bold looks attracted many buyers in the beginning but with time lost its sales. But keeping this aside, the SUV came with decent specs under the hood.

    Engine 1.5-Litre Turbo Petrol engine 1.5-Litre Turbo Petrol (Hybrid) 2.0-Litre Diesel
    Transmission 6-Speed Manual/ 7-Speed DCT Manual 6-Speed 6-Speed MT
    • One can choose from a total of 3 different power trains with different transmission options. The first is the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 143ps of max power and 250Nm of peak torque. This transmission is mated to either a 6-speed MT or a 7-speed DCT.
    • The other engine is the same 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine churning the same power and torque figures but comes with a battery and a motor, Yes! a Hybrid. That said, this engine only comes with one transmission option, that is a 6-speed MT.
    • Diesel is also an option which is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine that puts out 170ps of max power and a 350Nm of peak torque. Sadly, this engine also gets only a 6-speed manual transmission with no option of an automatic.
  10. Jeep Compass

      • Jeep Compass comes with a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine that makes 160ps of peak power and 250Nm of peak torque. Considering its size, this is indeed a really good power to weight ratio. This engine comes mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DCT automatic.
      • Diesel is also an option, which is a 2.0-litre that produces 170ps of peak power and 350Nm of peak torque. That said, this engine is mated to a 6-speed MT transmissions.
      • A third is more a powerful engine is also an option in the Trailhawk variant, that gives a bit of extra power at about 173ps and identical 350Nm of max torque. In the transmission department, this comes with a 9-speed torque converter automatic with no opinion of a manual. PS. This variant gets 4X4 as standard.
