10 Reasons To Choose Petrol Over Diesel For Your Next Car

Choosing a petrol car or a diesel car used to be a hard choice. Do you want a cheap petrol car or better efficiency diesel car? Nowadays with the BS6, the choice is almost made for you and its petrol. If you still think you want to opt for a diesel car allow us to give you ten points as to why your next car should be petrol.

  1. Petrol Cars Are Cheaper

Petrol cars are cheaper to purchase than diesel. New diesel cars cost a ton with taxes imposed on them. They also have a worse depreciation per year compared to a petrol car. Depreciation means the rate at which the value of the car declines if you sell it as a used car.  Also, don’t forget that petrol cars are cheaper to get serviced as compared to diesel cars.

  2. Almost No Price Difference Between Petrol And Diesel

Earlier people used to buy a costly diesel car and with the difference in the price of petrol and diesel, they would make all the extra money spent back in a year and then spend less than a petrol owner would. Now however this has changed. First of all, as we already covered due to the increased taxes on diesel cars they are really costly compared to petrol cars and even more so the fuel prices are almost the same. This year even saw diesel be costlier than petrol in Delhi.

  3. Petrol Can Be Easily Converted Into CNG If You Desire

If you decide to convert your petrol car into a CNG you are in luck because it won’t take a lot of modification necessary for it to do so. Converting a diesel engine into a CNG however, requires a lot of modification to the engine and is way costly compared to converting a petrol engine.

  4. Petrol Engines Are Cheaper To Repair

Machines are inevitably gonna fail and when they do its better to have a petrol engine than a diesel engine because they are cheaper to get repaired. There is a big however here. Diesel engines are quite sturdy and often work longer than a petrol engine would but some parts of a diesel engine if they fail are really costly to repair due to both labour cost and the availability of the part. It can be said that it is almost similar in this to that of petrol because they fail less but when they do fail they cost more.

  5. Diesel Engines Are Bad For The Environment

These engines produce emissions like soot which is not good for the environment at all. They do produce fewer greenhouses gasses but things like NOx are more harmful to the environment than CO2. Petrol on the other hand produces less air-polluting particles. With BS6 the amount will be even lower for petrol while diesel engines are getting abandoned by companies.

  6. Diesel Engines Are Being Forsaken By Major Automobile Companies

Maruti Suzuki, India’s biggest car manufacture have already said that they won’t be making BS6 diesel engine anymore. This is because the cost of research will make the car price soar to amounts that will not earn a profit. Other companies like Renault and Skoda have also decided to not continue diesel cars for BS6.

  7. Diesel Engines Are Noisy

Driving in a diesel-powered car is annoying, to say the least. Because of their higher compression ratio, they make a bigger ‘boom’ in the ignition chamber and just add to the already growing list of noise pollution sources. It may not appear much but noise pollution can cause serious health problems like high blood pressure, heart diseases and stress.

  8. Diesel Engines Can Only Be Used For 10 Years In Delhi

Due to the amount of polluting substances they contribute, NGT on 2015 declared that no diesel engine above the age of 10 years will be allowed to run in Delhi. Petrol on the other hand can be used for 15 years. So if you are in Delhi it might be a good idea to just go for petrol cars.

  9. Petrol Engines Are More Powerful

This one gets a bit vague. Diesel engines are not exactly made for speed. They have high torque in a short burst at the start which gives them good acceleration. Petrol engines, on the other hand, have their power depended on the revs of the engine which gives them power on a wider scale compared to diesel thus allowing them to have more RPM, Horsepower and faster 0-100 km/hr timings.

  10. Petrol Engines Are More Responsive

Petrol engines have a better throttle response compared to diesel engines due to having better power delivery. This makes the petrol engine feel peppier to drive while the diesel feels a bit sluggish.

These were the ten reason as to why your next car should be petrol operated. Youll be doing both yourself and the environment a favour by choosing petrol over diesel.

  1. Thanks for sharing such a valuable post with us. I am gonna bookmark this site.I have also seen your older post it is always awesome!

  2. Hyundai Diesel car engines are more refined than Suzuki… Basically Suzuki makes low cost vehicles, so for them Petrol cars are good. You can save money.

  3. When do you buy a diesel car?
If you want to drive a lot of kilometers inexpensively, then a diesel in that area is probably a good choice. Still, it depends on your situation whether a diesel car is the best buy for you. Because, yes, refueling diesel is cheaper, but nowadays you have to take more things into account.

    Advantages of a diesel car
Despite the fact that diesel cars are often negative in the news with, for example, environmental zones where older diesels are not allowed, they have absolute advantages: • diesel cars are less maintenance-sensitive and that saves on the wallet • lower fuel costs per liter • more economical in consumption

Well, straightforward, you would think. Nevertheless, we recommend that you do some calculations before making the final choice for a diesel car.

    Tipping point diesel car
What is smarter for you: a petrol car or a diesel car? That depends on a number of factors. Also keep in mind that it is best to buy a recent model diesel car. It is best to be as young as possible, so that you do not have to worry about environmental zones that you are not allowed to enter.

In addition to fuel costs, buying a car also involves road tax, depreciation and maintenance. If you drive few kilometers, a petrol car is cheaper. You pay more road tax for a diesel car than for a petrol car, so you have to drive considerably more to close that gap.

Do you want to calculate your exact turning point? You do this as follows: (12 months x road tax) + (kilometers / consumption) x fuel price. Now you have your costs per year. Do this for both diesel and petrol and you know what is cheaper for you.

As an average you can use the following turning point for diesel cars: • for lighter cars around 13,500 kilometers • for heavier cars around 14,500 kilometers

  4. Kindly dont spread misnomer’s, very inaccurate and incomplete comparison, Would have liked to see a better comparison, for instance turbo petrol (port injection or GDI) are as expensive to maintain as their Common rail turbocharged diesel engines, A singular instance of petrol vs diesel cost doesn’t determine the coat of diesel and petrol throughout the year, Consistent low real world fuel consumption of turbo petrol, Amateurish points such as responsiveness/drivability of petrol vs diesel depends more on the way the engine has been mapped and mated to a specific transmission and final gearing, In terms of responsiveness an inherent property of Diesel engines is that it has much better torque at low rpms than petrols, in terms of FE Diesel’s will always provide more fuel efficiency with the same or less we engine capacity.

NVH levels have come a long way even in a diesel engine and as far is noise pollution is concerned, the amount of sound deadening material used adds weight (>100kgs) which dents possible FE benefits and not to mention the amount of wasteful resources being used which cannot be used again and ultimately cause more harm than good.

  5. Hi, does the petrol being better than diesel argument still holds true by recent fuel price hikes? As diesel gives better mileage which one a buyer should consider now for buying?

    • Hey Sarathi,
As of 2022, we are seeing a growing reluctance (or prejudice) against Diesel vehicles. And as you pointed out, the fuel price difference does not justify the higher upfront cost of a Diesel vehicle and costlier maintenance. In conclusion, stick to Petrol vehicles till the time India makes a complete transition to Electrci Vehicles.

  6. I am also owning a petrol Ecosport with a turbo engine and even in second gear with air conditioning on, I am able to climb slopes of basement from my car without any trouble. It’s a car that made me a confident driver with it’s great handling on offer. A petrol engine is a just absolutely insane. Diesel engine has its own advantage but my Choice is always a petrol car.

    • This is very subjective. Given a car is well kept, well-maintained and routinely serviced, It can potentially outlive its owner.
      Diesel or Petrol.
