10 Things You Should Never Do in a CNG Car | CNG Maintenance

CNG car maintenance isn’t a big deal, to be honest. CNG cars have gained a lot of traction in India. The CNG car market has grown exponentially and for obvious reasons.

Deploying a CNG cylinder in your car’s trunk seems feasible to many because of the added benefits. But everything isn’t perfect. That’s true for all the things and the CNG cylinders as well. Now, the CNG cylinders often come with their own set of problems but they seem negligible in front of the benefits.

So, what makes CNG cars worth it? Moreover, how to make sure that your CNG vehicle works optimally through its life. Here are some of the DOs & DON’Ts that you shall follow for your CNG vehicle.

  1. Don’t Start Your Car on CNG

It is always preferred to start up your car on petrol. Starting up your car on CNG might lead to some wear and tear in the long run. Fire up your car’s engine on petrol mode and drive for a kilometre or two. This will help to lubricate the engine for a smoother ride ahead.

2. Don’t Ignore The Spark Plugs

The spark plugs in a CNG vehicle tend to wear out faster. Get these spark plugs replaced or checked from time to time. Moreover, in order to save some bucks, you can also go for a ‘jugaad’. While one way is to replace petrol-based spark plugs with the ones meant for CNG vehicles.

The other way is to reduce the gap between the metallic tip of your plug and the actual point of spark. This will save you some money and is also a durable method.

3. Don’t Park in the Sun

Park your CNG car under a shade. This is a two-thronged approach. Firstly, you get to sit in a relatively cooler car when you come back. Secondly, it avoids evaporation of CNG. Yes, CNG tends to evaporate faster than petrol and diesel due to its gaseous nature. Parking under the sun avoids that evaporation.

4. Avoid Unauthorised Kits

This seems like a no-brainer. Moreover, this might be the most heard thing you’d have heard if you get a CNG fitted in your car. To save some bucks, many go for the CNG kits fitted from roadside mechanics and workshops.

While this might save you some money in the short run, t isn’t safe. An ill-fitted CNG kit can cause fire and turn out to be fatal. Choose wisely between your life and a few bucks.

Again, saving a few rupees might turn fatal. Aftermarket accessories if not associated with a warranty can lead to grave incidents. Hence, it is always preferred to go for accessories which follow the norms and industry standards. Try choosing accessories which come with warranties and comply with the safety norms.

6. Don’t Ignore The Leak Test

In order to avoid any leaks in the first place, don’t get your tank overfilled. Even getting it filled up to the brim, might not be a good idea. Moreover, as soon as you smell a gas leak pull over your car. Roll down all the windows and open the gates. Do not start up your car till checked by a mechanic or technician.

7. Do Not Avoid CNG Maintenance

Avoiding your CNG maintenance and servicing can hamper your vehicle in the long run. A CNG car might save you money that’s for sure, but irregular maintenance may cost you dearly.

Getting your car maintained on a regular interval ensures proper performance. Irregular maintenance is one of the prime causes of fire in most of the CNG cars. In order to avoid any incidents, proper servicing is all you need.

8. Do Not Leave The Air Filters Clogged

Air filters are an essential component of any CNG vehicle. The moment your CNG vehicle crosses the 10,000-kilometre mark, make sure to get your air filters cleaned or changed.

9. Do Not Run Empty

Checking your CNG tank on regular intervals is a good practice. Never try to squeeze every bit out from a CNG cylinder. Running a CNG vehicle on a close to empty cylinder might increase the pressure on the valves. Always ensure a good flow of petrol as well as CNG in your vehicle.

10. Clean the Throttle Body

The throttle body of a car is a connecting valve between the air filter and the intake. Make sure. Once again, the 10,000 mark is the ideal time to get it checked, cleaned and replaced. CNG maintenance isn’t that big of a task if done right.

    • Hi Sidharth
Installing CNG in Creta will make it lose its power considerably and you will also feel the lag while you drive. In my opinion, its no sense to install CNG in Creta. However, if you still wish to proceed, Lovato can be your choice!

  1. Hi Vishal,

Can I install a CNG sequential kit on my Hyundai Grand i10 Magna 1.2 Kappa petrol car ? If yes what would be the cost of the kit and of getting the same endorsed on the RC for Noida location.

    • Hi Amit
Yes, you can definitely install CNG in your 2014 Grand i10 1.2. The cost can vary depending upon your location. However, it will not cost you more then 50,000 INR if you go for Lovato’s sequential CNG kit which works fairly well with Hyundai. Don’t go to Hyundai dealerships for this as they will unnecessarily charge you extra for the same thing.

    • Hi Mr.Amit I request you not to go for CNG aftermarket installation. If there is no choice Means you have to Drive Daily I would Prefer to Go on installation Company Like : Highrise,BRC,Mijo,Autogas May be the Best Suitable for Hyundai cars.Avoid Lovato Replacing parts are too costly.

Pros of CNG after Market Installation :

      Cons of CNG :
      *Cylinder Valves life gets Shorten.
*More frequently Maintenance like Changing Spark Plug timne to time.
      * injectors clogging & many More
      *Pickup lag.

May My words on cons may be seems bitter but its true on my experience. But if stiill no choice go ahead and enjoy the experience 🙂

Tip : Install any kit no matter try to find the Best Person who is knowledegable in thsi field.
2nd Tip : Try to get Install a 2nd hand kit if you are getting at Rs.25k As most of Branded Car gets failed so just try to tel you be safer side 🙂

  8. Hello,

i have ford fiesta 2007 model. fitted OBD type 2 cng kit of sanito make an year ago. from past month, the pickup on cng has reduced drastically, also car is switching off at low speeds on cng, rpms are fluctuating. no problem at all on petrol. mechanic replaced spark plugs, ignition cables & ignition coil. also cleaned the throttle body. But still problem doesnt resolved. CNG mechanic checked the calibration and said it is ok. what could be the problem and how to resolve ?

    • Hi Sanket
I am afraid that you did not go with a good kit for your car. Now that the damage has been made, you can ask your mechanic to mechanically increase the base RPM of your car. This will eventually harm your engine but now that you are in this situation already, you have got no other choice according to me.
Before doing this, try changing the ECU temporarily which can be the only other way out.
