Delhi Traffic Police Decides To Withdraw 1,50,000 Challans

The Delhi Traffic Police has decided to withdraw 1,50,000 e-challans issued mostly to those who were found overspeeding on the National Highway 24 between August and October 2019.

The withdrawal of the challans has been confirmed but they have not released any official statement to indicate what will happen to the amount that has already been taken as fine.

A joint commissioner level police official has released a statement anonymously where he said “Delhi Traffic Police is withdrawing about 1.5 lakh challans issued in two and a half months between August and October 10. Most of these were related to overspeeding on National Highway 24”.

These challans were issued on National Highway 24 between Nizamuddin bridge and Ghazipur. These areas are close to the Delhi-UP border.

What’s behind the challan withdrawal?

The Delhi Traffic Police has decided to withdraw these challans as these challans were created due to a miscommunication between the PWD of that area and the Delhi Police.

The PWD had put up a speed limit board showing 70 km/h as the speed limit for that road but the challans were issued to all the vehicles exceeding a speed of 60km/h. The police had been receiving a lot of complaints regarding this. Therefore they finally decided to withdraw the challans.

What the Delhi Traffic Police has to say?

The police officials said that they had already instructed the PWD to change the speed limit board to 60 km/h but they didn’t do it timely. As a result, they have re-programmed their cameras and now they have been set to read the maximum speed as 70km/h.

Reports also suggest that there were some drivers who were about to approach the court with a PIL stating their innocence and non-violation of the traffic rules. The Delhi Traffic Police has withdrawn the challans as of now but they are yet to confirm what they will be doing with the already acquired amount.
