BS6 Diesel Vs BS4 Diesel Engine | What is the Difference?

Considering the environment is getting spoiled new exhaust emission norms had to be implemented. Nowadays BS6 is all over the place. We encounter this word more than any other thing. As the 1s April 2020 is approaching the number of questions is also increasing. The Indian Automobile industry is working in full swing to deliver the desired products without much increase in the cost.

There are many heavy and small tweaks mate to the BS6 vehicles. To design and develop these necessary changes engineers had everything at stake. Now their hard work has paid off and BS6 cars are running on the road. The increase in cost was somewhat unavoidable.

What is the Difference between BS4 and BS6 Diesel engine?
What is the Difference between BS4 and BS6 Diesel engine?

Let us see what all has gone into the BS6 Diesel engines as compared to the BS4 Diesel engine.

Components on a BS4 Diesel Engine

BS4 was implemented from April 2017 and there were no major changes from BS3 to BS4. Majorly being changes in the exhaust system of the vehicle. The changes include

  1. Installation of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)

EGR, as the name suggests re-circulates the exhaust gasses inside the combustion chamber in order to reduce NOx (nitrogen Oxide). Which is very harmful to the environment. The downside of EGR is increasing COx (Carbon Oxides) which is less harmful than NOx by a considerable large amount.

  2. Adding SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)

SCR is also a device used in the exhaust of diesel engines. This is responsible for further reducing NOx levels from the exhaust of the vehicle. In SCR an Ad-blue additional tank is installed in the vehicle. It contains an ammonium solution. The NOx from the exhaust combines with the ammonium and reduces NOx levels by a large extinct.

BS6 is going to be live from 1st April this year. Skipping a BS5 step in- between, BS6 will see many serious changes. Some being.

  1. Installation of DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)

DPF is a porous device attached to the exhaust system. As diesel engine produces a ton of soot and particulate matter. DPF acts as a filter to soot and doesn’t let it escape into the environment.

  2. Addition of RDE (Real Driving Emission)

Some vehicles will be getting RDE as standard. This is to keep a track of the exhaust gasses while the engine is running by adding sensors to the exhaust system.

  3. Improved Injection system

The DI (Direct-Injection) system of the diesel engines will be upgraded by a considerable amount. This is to do with the new BS6 diesel engine that needs to run on less lubricating and less polluting BS6 fuel. The new BS6 diesel is deprived of sulphur in order to reduce SOx (Sulphur oxides).

All that considered a few extra costs paid to buy the new less polluting is justified. As it is our environment we have to save.
