6 Most-Fuel Efficient Diesel Engines In India

Everyone knows that majorly there are 2 types of engine that run a car. A spark-ignition engine (petrol engine) and a compression ignition engine (diesel engine). But did you know, it is the diesel or the compression ignition engine that is more efficient to run? We’ll not dive into the reason, but still, if you want to learn about it, just drop a comment and we’ll start working on it. Moving on, not all engines are equal or produce the same numbers. So, today we count down 6 engine in India that are among the most fuel-efficient in our country.

PS. The mileage numbers mentioned in the article are sourced from ARAI. And these fuel efficiency numbers are possible if you drive respectfully. Additionally, there are more engines that may be more efficient. But for now, there 6 are of the most fuel-efficient petrol engines around the block.

  1. Hyundai 1.2-Litre U2 CRDi Diesel (25kmpl – 26kmpl)

    The Korean auto giant Hyundai is known for making some really unique diesel engine. This is where Hyundai in India likes to call their engine with a U2 CRDi badge. That said, on the top, the most fuel-efficient diesel engine on the block is the 1.2-litre 3 cylinder motor.

    This engine is capable of generating a peak power of 75hp and about 190Nm of maximum torque. Also, this engine only comes in a couple of cars, Grand i10 Nios and Aura. That said, depending on the car you have the average fuel economy may range from 25kmpl to 26kmpl.

  2. Hyundai 1.5-Litre U2 CRDi Diesel (100hp) (25kmpl – 26kmpl)

    The other motor from the Hyundai stable is another U2 CRDi engine. But this time it is a little bigger and adds a cylinder to the engine. This means this diesel engine is a lot more powerful. Also, this engine does duties in Hyundai i20, Venue and the Kia Sonet.

    Speaking of the specifications, it is a 1.5-litre diesel motor that churns 100hp of maximum power. On the other hand, produces a peak power of 240Nm. Additionally, This engine comes with a fixed geometry turbo. Again, as per the car, this engine returns a mileage of about 25-26kmpl.

    It is really delightful to see an engine from an Indian car manufacturer. Well, a couple of years back Tata introduced a new diesel engine. It was a 1.5-litre turbo diesel, that generates 90hp of max power and the peak torque output sits at 200Nm.

    This engine is available with 2 cars to be precise, Altroz and Nexon. But depending upon the vehicle, this engine can return a mileage of 25kmpl to 26kmpl if we drive with care.

  4. Hyundai 1.5-Litre U2 CRDi Diesel (113hp) (25kmpl – 26kmpl)

    Coming back to the potent engine from the Koreans, the 1.5-litre U2 CRDi engine. Is this the same engine as the one in i20 or Venue, you may ask? Both the engines are the same as well as different. To being with, the major difference is that the one in the hatch gets a fixed geometry turbo. Whereas the engine in Hyundai Creta and Verna gets a variable geometry turbo.

    Because of thing both the engines have different tuning also. Now, moving towards the numbers, this engine generates 113bhp of max power. And produces maximum torque of about 250Nm. Also, it is the Hyundai Verna where this engine excels as it is fun to drive as well as full efficient. You can extract anywhere from 25kmpl to 26kmpl depending on how you drive.

  5. Honda 1.5-litre i-DTEC (24kmpl – 25kmpl)

    Well, the Japanese carmaker is not that far behind. Moving to the Honda’s 1.5 i-DTEC engine. You surely will be aware that in the initial stages Honda was a petrol-only car brand in India. But the rising demand created the need for a diesel engine. This is where this engine came to the market in Honda Amaze. Moving to 2021, this engine still exists but the range of cars that offer it has increased.

    Honda City, W-RV and Amaze all use this i-DTEC engine. Also, not to forget, the engine is now BS6 compliant. This engine is healthy enough to produce 100hp of max power and 200Nm of peak torque. When driven carefully, the engine can return a mileage of 24kmpl to 25kmpl.

  6. Ford 1.5-Litre TDCi Diesel Engine (24kmpl – 25kmpl)

    Another carmaker to have a 1.5-litre diesel engine is Ford. The American car make Ford uses this engine in Figo, Aspire and Ecosport. Moving on, the company likes to call it the TDCi engine. In addition to that, despite the increase in price because of the BS6 transaction, Ford did not discontinue the Diesel engine like many other carmakers.

    That said, this engine produces max power of 100hp with a peak torque of 215Nm. Depending on the car in which this engine resides, you can get mileage anywhere from 24kmpl to 25kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki 1.3-Litre Multi-Jet Diesel engine (25kmpl – 26kmpl)

  • Indians just love Maruti Suzuki and so did they love the 1.3-litre multi-jet diesel engine. There was a time when the majority of the diesel cars running on the road had this engine.
  • Hence denoting the motor as the national engine of India will not be wrong. Now, moving on to the technical specs, this engine was available in two states of tunes.
  • One, that was available with cars like Swift and Baleno and the more powerful was the DDIS200. The latter was the one that did duties in vehicles like Ciaz and Vitara Brezza.
  • The less powerful engine produced 74bhp of max power and 190Nm of maximum torque. The DDiS 200 was healthy enough to generate 89hp of peak power and 200Nm of sheer torque.
  • When driven carefully and also depending upon the vehicle, this engine was capable of returning a mileage of 25kmpl – 26 kmpl. In addition to that, many users owning a car with DDiS 200 and SHVS tech claimed that they got 28kmpl – 30kmpl. Uff that’s a lot efficient.

  1. The diesel engine from Ford was another level. Now the best diesel cars are mostly from Tata and Mahindra and then the Hyundai group is the best. Honda has the best petrol engine of its the Honda City as that’s where Tata lacks but Mahindra kicks in yo. Honda should now bring fun to drive petrol SUVs to India as their performance oriented i-VTEC will be killer in SUV segment. Just ignore WRV, Jazz and Amaze because they have boring i-VTEC Engines.
