Saving the environment is going hand in hand with developing cleaner means of travel. Automotive manufacturers across the globe are putting their everything online in order to develop new greener means of travel. Ultium battery is the new breakthrough in EV research.
This is where EV (Electric Vehicles) come in. Almost each and every automotive manufacturer in the world is working on electrifying the gasoline engines. The increase in EVs on road will surely make a tremendously good impact on the environment.
Afterall a new latest technology has been successfully developed by a US-based automaker GM (General Motors). GM motors have unveiled a new tech in EV’s battery which will be advantageous for future EVs.
Ultium Batteries
The new batteries will offer a wide range of configurations from a basic battery for light purposes to a heavy-duty battery for loading trucks.
Capacity
- The battery capacity may vary from 50.0kWh which will go all the way up to a whopping 200kWh battery.
- The 50kWh configuration is mainly for the small family cars as seen by some vehicles running on 50kWh battery.
- 200kWh will be the first large-capacity battery which will likely be seen on heavy trucks and SUV like Hummer EV.M
- The largest production battery in EV up till now is the 100kWh battery in the Tesla Model S and Model X.
- The new battery might be 18inches thick and will rest on the base of the vehicle to lower the CG (centre of gravity) of the vehicle.
Prices
Currently, the battery prices are on the higher side making it a bit difficult for common people in buying an EV.
- The average batter price now is about $156 per kWh.
- It was way too much higher in the early years like 2010 $1100 kWh.
- The prices will surely decrease in the future to as low as $100 kWh.

Charging and Range
GM’s Ultrium battery is a revolution in itself. It gives a range of as high as 400km on a single charge.
Not just that but the charging times will change drastically after its commercialization.
