Indian Hatchbacks Listed According To Their Global NCAP Safety Ratings

Much recently, the latest Global NCAP crash test ratings have shifted the focus of a large number of buyers towards the safety. A car can be powerful, loaded with features, but when it comes to safety, you might find that some carmakers are still overlooking it. In this edition of making roads safer, we will take a look at the budget hatchbacks and their safety ratings.

Take a look: 8 Safest 4 and 5 Star Global NCAP Rated Cars in India

1. Tata Altroz – 5 Stars (Global NCAP)

   

   After launching India’s first safest car, the Nexon, Tata began the endeavour to make the roads safe. The next in this was the Tata Altroz, the premium hatchback that scored an impressive 5-star rating at the Global NCAP for the adult occupancy. Altroz scored 16.13 out of 17 points for the adult occupancy and 29 out of 49 for the child occupancy. The bodyshell integrity was found stable as the Altroz was able to withstand load after the crash. Altroz comes loaded with safety features such as ISOFIX child seat anchors, dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, cornering stability control, reverse parking sensors, high-speed alert alarm, impact sensing auto door unlock and headlamp levelling, right from the base variant.

2. Tata Tiago – 4 Stars (Global NCAP)

   

   Tiago scored a 4-star rating with 12.52 out of 17 for the adult occupancy and 34.15 out of 49 for the child occupancy. Do note that Tiago is safer for children when compared with the Altroz, damn Tata! Tata Tiago comes loaded with ABS with EBD, cornering stability control, dual-front airbags, over-speed alert, seat belt pretensioners and rear parking sensors, right from the base variant.

3. Volkswagen Polo – 4 Stars (Global NCAP)

   

   A hatchback that actually started the trend of the hot hatch in India. People complain that the design has not been changed since its inception, but in my opinion, this design can still go for much longer. Let’s keep this debate for a different day. The Polo scored a 4-star rating for the adult occupancy. As for the score, it has 12.54 out of 17. For the child occupancy, it scored 29.91 out of 49. This puts it below the Tiago in this list. Polo gets ABS with EBD, airbags, parking sensors, high mounted stop lamps with the standard variant while the top-spec variant gets ESP.

4. Maruti Suzuki Ignis – 3 Stars (Global NCAP)

   

   Ignis, a car that company call urban SUV is a hatchback that has safety rating the same as that of Kia Seltos. Keeping this aside, Ignis scored 9.99 out 17 for the adult occupancy and 8 for the child occupancy. Ignis comes with dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, front seatbelt pretensioners, ISOFIX child seat anchors for the base variant.

5. Maruti Suzuki Swift – 2 Stars (Global NCAP)

   

   The limitless hatchback has been in the run for more than 15 years now. Taking a look at the popularity, Swift has a marginal safety, should have been way better. It scored a 2-star rating for the adult occupancy. Talking about the numbers, 7.08 for the adult occupancy, 16.23 for the child. The body shell has been rated unstable. Maruti offers basic safety features with Swift.

6. Hyundai Grand i10 Nios – 2 Stars (Global NCAP)

   

   This is what stirs speculations about Hyundai’s safety among its cars. Hyundai has been known to give features in bulk. But this seems to be left out in the safety arena. It scored 7.05 in the adult occupancy and 15 for the child. Global NCAP tested Grand i10 NIOS recently. It comes with dual-front airbags, ABS, SBR and seatbelt pre-tensioners from the base variant. Do note that ISOFIX is not offered in the base variant. Paired with a turbocharged engine, this car would definitely not be a good option.

7. Maruti Suzuki WagonR

   

   Tallboy stance, spacious cabin and CNG option have been pulling a lot of car buyers towards the WagonR. When it comes to safety, WagonR scored a 2-star rating at the Global NCAP. Do note that the WagonR tested is the 2019 model, which is based on the Suzuki Heartect platform. Talking about the numbers, WagonR scored 6.93 for the adult occupancy and 16.33 for the child.

8. Datsun Redigo

   

   Nissan-owned Datsun’s Redigo scored a single star rating for the adult occupancy. It scored 8.36 out of 17 in the adult occupancy while 15.63 out of 49 for the child occupancy. It currently offers driver airbags, ABS and rear parking sensors for the base variant.

Talking about other hatchbacks such as the best selling Maruti Suzuki Alto and Renault Kwid, the generation or the facelifts that were tested are way older than the current ones. It is from the time when no airbags were offered. We will have to wait for new ratings, especially for the Kwid that has been recently updated.
