Heads-Up Display – A Gimmick Or A Useful Feature? Explained!

Modern cars are getting more and more features every passing day. Things like an air-purifier, automatic parking brake and 10+ inch infotainment systems are a standard affair these days. One of these features is a heads-up display. This is one feature that had recently started showing up in cars, even in some cars in the more affordable segment. Today, let’s see if a heads-up display is actually useful.

  1. What is a heads-up display?

A heads-up display is a small display on the windshield, directly in front of the driver. This usually contains vital driving information like speed, RPM and gears. It also includes turn-by-turn navigation information in most cars. This feature was originally needed by race car drivers so that they could look at their speed and RPMs without having to even slightly tilt their eyes.

  1. How useful is this feature?

While some may say that it is a gimmick, an HUD is actually a very useful feature. It really helps drivers in keeping their eyes straight on the road without having to look around. It especially helps with the turn-by-turn navigation guidelines, for which one would usually have to look at the phone or the infotainment screen. Cars with road sensors can also project lane information, speed limit and other such information on the heads-up display.

  1. Which cars have a heads-up display?

Most high-end/luxury cars have this feature. Mini Coopers, BMW’s (especially the sedans), Range Rover Velar, Audi A6 are a few amongst many others that come with a HUD. In the more common segment, the KIA Seltos GT comes along with a sporty HUD.
