Hyundai And Its Complete Engine Line-Up Explained

The Korean auto giant Hyundai has seen a sudden surge in car sales in India. Over the years, people have started considering Hyundai as an option over the conventional car brands. Considering the statistics, we assume that this is because Hyundai is offering the latest gadgets and gizmos along with some seriously powerful engines. Speaking of the powerhouse, there are numerous engines the Hyundai offers in their cars.

So, let’s dive in a little and find more about the powertrains that the Hyundai offers.

Let’s start with Spark Ignition engines

  1. 1.1-litre Epsilon G4HG (69bhp @5,500rpm, 99Nm@4,500rpm)

    Third Generation Hyundai Santro (2018-present)
    Third Generation Hyundai Santro (2018-present)

Starting with the smallest engine in Hyundai’s lineup is the 1.1-litre G4HG engine. So, let’s talk a little straight, this small engine is capable of generating 69bhp 🙂 of max power at a fairly low 5,500rpm. Whereas the torque output sits at a decent 99Nm. Well, these figures say very little about this motor.

    Engine Specs

Engine 1086cc Epsilon G4HG Petrol Engine
    Power 69bhp @ 5,500rpm
    Torque 99Nm @ 4,500rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 20 kmpl

Okay, allow me to tell you that this engine has a good and a bad side. Let’s go with a good first. This motor is the only 4 cylinder engine at this price point. Meaning the refinement is on point. Now moving to the other bit, on paper this engine is among the least powerful. That said, the car can entertain the occupants via a throaty stock exhaust note. Don’t believe us? look for yourself.

If you haven’t guessed it, This is Hyundai Santro that is pampered by this engine.

  2. 1.2-litre Kappa G4LA (82bhp@6,300rpm, 114Nm@4,200rpm)

    Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

Moving on, the 1.2-litre Kappa G4LA comes next when it comes to power and capacity. And this gain in cubic capacity, the power and torque both increase drastically. This supremely refined motor generates a decent power of 82bhp and the maximum torque output sits at 114Nm.

    Engine Specs

Engine 1197cc Kappa G4LA Petrol Engine
    Power 82bhp@6,300rpm
    Torque 114Nm@4,200rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 21 kmpl

Well, these numbers are at power when considering the rival. Also, this is one of Hyundai’s favourite engines. Why? This engine powers a whole lot of cars, starting with, Grand i10 Nios, Aura, i20, and Venue. however, we believe the gear ratios may be different to accommodate the engine in the respective vehicles.

  3. 1.0- Litre T-Ci G3LB (99hp@4,500rpm, 172Nm@1,500rpm)

    2021 Hyundai Aura

Well, Hyundai was not the first car maker to bring a small capacity turbo petrol engine to India. But it was Hyundai through which downsizing of the engine became famous here. And this 1.0-litre T-Ci was among the first engines to enter our Indian market after T-GDi (will talk about it in the next point).

    Engine Specs

    Engine 998cc T-Ci G3LB Turbo Petrol Engine
    Power 99hp@4,500rpm
    Torque 172Nm@1,500rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 20 kmpl

Well, this is essentially a retuned version of the 1.0-litre T-GDI motor. Now, talking about power, this small engine generates a max power of 99bhp and 172Nm of peak torque. When powering the cars like Grand i10 Nios, this motor sure is thrilling when driving one. Fun Fact: This engine also powers the Grand i10 N-line in the same state of tune in the Internation market.

  4. 1.0-Litre T-GDi G3LC (118hp@6,000rpm, 172Nm@1,500rpm)

    Next-Gen Hyundai i20
    Next-Gen Hyundai i20

Now let’s talk about the first turbo petrol engine from Hyundai to enter the Indian market. Like the other turbo petrol engine, this too is a 3-cylinder motor that generated a little higher 118hp of max power and a similar 172Nm of peak torque. It was the Hyundai Venue that first used this engine. In addition to that, this 1.0-litre T-GDi engine is refined when considering other 3 cylinder engines.

    Engine Specs

    Engine 998cc T-GDi G3LC Turbo Petrol
    Power 118hp@6,000rpm
    Torque 172Nm@1,500rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 20 kmpl

But after Indians became familiar with this engine, Hyundai started offering this powerhouse in other cars. Next, in the Hyundai’s portfolio to come with this engine was the next-gen Verna and later the Hyundai i20. Although we were expecting the sedan to come with 1.4 T-GDi (We’ll save this for some other day).

  5. 1.5-litre MPi G4FL (113bhp@6,300rpm, 144Nm@4,500rpm)

6 OG sedans vs new age sedans: the saga
    2020 Hyundai Verna

The other engine that is used in multiple cars in Hyundai is the 1.5-litre MPi. Hyundai Verna and Hyundai Creta come powered by this engine, not to forget, this is also common in cars from Kia.  Moving further, when compared to its competition, it surely is among the top but not *THE* most powerful.

    Engine Specs

Engine 1497cc MPi G4FL Petrol Motor
    Power 113bhp@6,300rpm
    Torque 144Nm@4,500rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 17.7 kmpl

Sticking to power, this 1.5-litre 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engine generates 113bhp. But the max torque figure sits at 144Nm. Well, this engine has nothing much going for it apart from refinement. Well, this also not the most efficient engine in its block.

  6. 1.4-litre T-GDi G4LD (138hp@6,000rpm, 242Nm@1,500rpm)

    Hyundai Creta
    Hyundai Creta

After the success of the 1.0-litre T-GDi, Hyundai brought its bigger more powerful brother the 1.4-litre T-GDi. This engine had an extra cylinder, obviously making it way more powerful. And this engine is healthy enough to produce a ming blowing 130bhp of max power and 242Nm of peak torque.

    Engine Specs

    Engine 1353cc T-GDi G4LD Turbo Petrol
    Power 138hp@6,000rpm
    Torque 242Nm@1,500rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 17 kmpl

These figures were class-leading unless the Japanese carmaker took over the crown. The top-selling SUV Hyundai Creta has this engine powering its front wheels.

  7. 2.0-litre G4NH (154bhp@6,200rpm, 195Nm@4,500rpm)

    Hyundai Alcazar
    Hyundai Alcazar

The most powerful petrol engine in Hyundai’s portfolios is the 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated GDNH engine. This huge engine powers the companies two big SUVs, Tuscon and the recently launched Alcazar.

    Engine Specs

    Engine 1999cc G4NH Petrol Engine
    Power 154bhp@6,200rpm
    Torque 195Nm@4,500rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 14.5 kmpl

Considering the sheer size of the SUVs, this engine is more than adequate. The 154bhp of max power and 195Nm of peak torques makes it possible for Alcazar to spring from 0-100kmph from 0 in under 10 seconds. Now that is quick.

Diesel Engines

  1. 1.2-litre U2 D3FB (74bhp@4,000rpm, 190Nm@1750rpm)

    Hyundai BS6 discount
    Hyundai Grand i10

Now let’s shift our focus to turbo diesel engines from Hyundai. This Korean car maker is among those selected brands that offer a small diesel engine. And, the entry-level diesel engine in the company’s portfolio is the 1.2-litre U2 D3FB. This 3 cylinder engine powers the Grand i10 Nios and the brand’s compact sedan Aura.

    Engine Specs

    Engine 1186cc U2 D3FB Diesel Engine
    Power 74bhp@4,000rpm
    Torque 190Nm@1750rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 25 kmpl

When getting behind the wheel of either of the two cars, you’ll notice it’s quite not a 3 cylinder you expect. Surprisingly the engineers at Hyundai have made these motors refined and yes, it does get the typical turbo kick. That said, on paper, the engine generates max power of 74bhp and 190Nm of peak torque.

  2. 1.5-litre U2 CRDi (113bhp@4,000rpm, 250Nm@1,500rpm)

    2020 Hyundai Verna Turbo
    2020 Hyundai Verna

Now let’s talk about the motor that powers most of the vehicle line-up of the company. This is the 1.5-litre U2 CRDi 4 cylinder engine that generates 113bhp of max power and 250Nm of peak torque. Here in India, this 1.5-litre motor comes in two states of tune, one with a constant geometry turbo and the other one with a VGT (variable geometry turbo).

    Engine Specs

Engine 1493cc U2 CRDi Diesel Engine
    Power 113bhp@4,000rpm
    Torque 250Nm@1,500rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 25 kmpl

Naturally, the engine with VGT is a lot more powerful. Speaking of the other tune, it generates 99bhp of max power and 240Nm of sheer torque. Hyundai i20 and Hyundai Venue get the 99bhp tune whereas Hyundai Verna, Creta, and the newly launched Alcazar get the 113bhp tune under their hood.

  3. 2.0-litre R2.0 D4HA (182bhp@4,000rpm, 400Nm@1,750rpm)

The most powerful diesel engine one can buy from this Korean carmaker in India is the 2.0-litre R2.0 D4HA. This 4 cylinder diesel motor powers the company’s flagship SUV in India, the Hyundai Tucson.

    Engine Specs

    Engine 1995cc R2.0 D4HA Diesel Engine
    Power 182bhp@4,000rpm
    Torque 400Nm@1,750rpm
Fuel Efficiency (ARAI Claimed) 17 kmpl

Now, shifting out focus to the power specs, this motor is capable of generating max power of 182bhp and a whopping 400Nm of peak torque. Also, the fun part is that this engine also comes with an option of a 4WD drivetrain.

Electric Powertrain

  1. Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (134bhp, 395Nm)

Hyundai was among the first international brands to bring an electric vehicle to our domestic shores. It was the Hyundai Kona, that entered our market with an electric powertrain. This powertrain is capable of generating max power of 134bhp and a bucket load 395Nm of peak torque. Aiding the car’s dynamics is the small form factor and a brilliant power to weight ratio.

    Powertrain Specs

    Electric Motor 150kW
    Power 134bhp
    Torque 395Nm
    Range (ARAI Claimed) 452 kms
