Hyundai Santro Discontinued! | No More Tall Boy!

The Korean carmaker first introduced the Santro in 1998. And back then it was among the best selling cars in the market with a different design. But after multiple updates and facelifts, in 2014 the carmaker pulled the plug on this vehicle. Later in 2018 exactly after two decades, Hyundai recreated the Santro for the Indian market. But the difference is this time around, the car didn’t do as expected. And now in May 2022, Hyundai has pulled the plug on this tallboy hatchback, Santro.

  • Well, it was only the Hyundai Santro that came with a 4-cylinder motor at this price point. Speaking of price, the starting price of the vehicle was Rs. 3.9 Lakh (ex-showroom) back in 2018.
  • Moving on, the motor was capable of generating peak power of 68bhp and maximum torque of 99Nm. The hatch came mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. With that, on the later stage, Hyundai also introduced the Santro that could also run on CNG.
  • Also, Hyundai Santo came with a rather different-looking interior with slightly better quality of materials on the inside, than its rivals. Also, it was a decently sized list of features. That features included, rear AC vents, day and night IRVM, electrically adjustable ORVMs, power windows, and others in the top-end trim.
  • The hatchback also sports some safety features including, dual airbags, ABS+EBD, and rear parking sensors in the top-end trim.

This is the second time that Hyundai has pulled the plug on the Santro. Well, since its launch back in 2018, Hyundai only sold a total of 1.5 lakh units of Santros in the country. This makes the car one of the least selling vehicles from the brand’s portfolio of cars.

Also, the average sales of the hatchback in the FY2022 were only 2,000 units. But what is the reason behind the low sales numbers? Well, it is the price. For one, the Hyundai Santro rivals the cars like the Maruti Suzuki Alto, Maruti Suzuki WagonR, Renault Kwid, and others. Among its rivals, this hatchback is relatively pricy. And for the target audience budget is all that matters. Hence, now in 2022, the Korean carmaker Hyundai has shelved its ionic hatchback in India.
