Hyundai working on an affordable EV? What’s Next?

All of us know that Hyundai was the first brand to introduce Indians to the world of Electric SUVs. Hyundai Kona was the first electric SUV in India. As of now, Hyundai is working on an affordable EV to rival the Tata Nexon EV which was launched in India recently.

With the growing need of EVs, Hyundai has decided to work on an affordable EV which will be cheaper than the already existing Hyundai Kona. The Kona comes with a starting price point of Rs. 23.7 Lakh. Hyundai, therefore, has decided to work on an EV that will target more number of audience and will have a wider reach as well. Considering the Kona, it belongs to a price segment that is not accessible to many. The 20Lakh plus price segment targets a narrow audience in India for sure.

Hyundai says that the new affordable EV could arrive in the Indian market anytime within the next 2 years. Moreover, Hyundai said that this would be a made-for-India and made-in-India product. Further, the automaker says that this would be a ground-up SUV and will be built on a flexible platform.

Though Hyundai aims to make this one an affordable EV they say that the flexible platform. This means that if needed, the SUV can be fixed with an IC engine or a hybrid powertrain as well! The one-charge life that the Korean automaker is currently aiming at is around 300kms. The Nexon EV currently delivers 312kms on a single charge as claimed by Tata.

Hyundai is currently in negotiations with the new suppliers that will be joining hands to take the evolving ecosystem forward to develop the affordable EV. Talking of the EV future in India, we already have the MG ZS, Tata Nexon EV and the Hyundai Kona. Mahindra is also planning to launch the eKUV100 and the eXUV300 in the near future.
