6 Ways to Get the Best Sound Quality in your car!

With many modern-day cars coming equipped with high-quality audio systems from reputed brands like Bose and Harman Kardon, there is still some scope to improve your car’s audio output. In this article, we will look at some of the simplest and easiest ways to improve the sound quality in your car. We agree getting some expensive and quality stuff is definitely a straight answer to this but there is something for those too who want to extract good quality from their stock audio setup.

  1. Replace the speakers

Well, if your car already comes equipped with speakers from quality brands like the one shown above, this one is not for you. Generally, the car makers don’t pay much attention to what kind of sound system they are providing in the car. If we still believe they do, the sound is the last prospect on their checklist because this can increase the cost and therefore affect the sales. The best thing you can do to improve sound quality in your car is to replace your stock speakers with good quality speakers from a reputed brand like Pioneer (the most affordable commonly used brand).

  2. High-quality playbacks

This is the easiest thing you can do to improve the sound quality of your car. Whether you download your favourite tracks or stream them online, just select the highest quality possible. Although you will lose some extra bits of your mobile data in case of streaming it will definitely be worth it! The quality of output you will experience will definitely be better than what you would have experienced in case of a low-quality audio track. Go for the highest possible bit rate.

  3. Use Dampers

Just imagine how many vibrations does your door face while you drive. The door is surely not a perfect place for placing your speakers just because it is a thin metal sheet and faces many vibrations during your drive. These vibrations hinder the sound quality that you experience side your car’s cabin. If you attach products like the one shown above in the picture to your car’s door, you will provide your speaker with a much more stable platform than it was before. This will help you improve the sound quality of your car.

  4. Invest in an amplifier

If someone asks you, which are the best speakers for experiencing the maximum bass? Your answer should always be the equipment mentioned above that is the amplifier. No matter how good your speakers are, there is always a scope of improvement if you add on an amplifier to the speakers. This will help them generate extra power output. No matter how much your power your car’s stereo may generate, the amplifier will always provide a cleaner power resulting in better sound quality.

  5. Adding an Equalizer

Sound is a simple science-based experience. Your car has different surfaces that act differently towards the sound waves generated by the tracks you play. The glass and metals reflect the sound while the carpets and some of the plastics absorb it. While your stereo might have an inbuilt equalizer, you can install an advanced equalizer which will help you customise your sound properly and have a better experience. This is because it will help you adjust the frequency of your sound waves in such a way that you can take all the materials of your car into consideration.

  6. Bypassing the DAC

We have finally given farewell to the aux ports in the car stereos. But for the people still having a stereo with an aux port, using the port is not a good idea for sure. This is because your phone which is your playback source most of the times has a built-in DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) which is good enough to provide good output in your earphones but not your car stereo. Always plug in your phone in the stereo using the USB cable or other sources like Bluetooth. Using the auxiliary connection always makes the sound quality take a hit.

  1. Crucial Info not mentioned here

Choosing the right speaker system – brand, wattage, sensitivity, etc.

Well, it’s not like you buy anything from the market and slap it on in place of your stock audio system. Today, most cars come with a decent audio system which not only sound good, but produce good amounts of higher and lower frequencies. Let’s be honest, they actually sound good. They rarely will distort when raising the volume up. Why?

They may not necessarily be a superb brand with high power outputs. The crucial point here is that the headunit and the speakers have been paired well. Pairing in terms of matching their power outputs and inputs respectively.
The headunit has a certain power output (in RMS). Most stock headunits have a power output of 15-20W per channel. You will have to find it out in the users manual or download its E-Manual to get to know. The speakers also have a certain power input (in RMS).
These 2 need match up, along with its impedance (generally given in Ohms rating with this symbol “Ω”)
The next thing the car manufacturers already do is give you basic sound dampening throughout your door panels. That is why most stock audio setup will already produce decent sound.

So, with the example here, everything has been paired well. If you’re unsatisfied with the current performance, it’s not to loud, or the bass isn’t punchy enough, or the stock speakers have gotten damaged, and you want an upgrade, use the above example to pair headunit, amplifier, and speakers.

Why does Amplifiers come into picture and what do I do with them?

Most aftermarket speakers come with a power input of a minimum of 40W RMS. And most aftermarket headunits have a power output of 20-25W RMS per channel.
Hence, if you just slap on an aftermarket headunit with aftermarket speakers, the speakers will be underpowered. They will not sound bad, or distort. The speakers would never reach their true potential.

This is where Amplifiers come into the picture. They are a bridge between your headunit, and your speakers.
The Amplifiers, as named, amplify the sound output coming out of the headunit to a higher output rating, for example 70W (RMS) x 4 channels.

Hence, the next thing is to find the right speakers of the same power input rating (in RMS). The speaker box will have the RMS power rating written on it somewhere. You will have to look for it.

After doing this, you will have the basics done already. Then you can find dampening materials and further dampen your car doors, etc.

    Hope this helps.
