iMT VS DCT | Is This Comparison Fair & Just?

A while ago, I had a chance to drive the Hyundai Venue with the iMT as well as the DCT. And this is when it struck my mind, which one should you go for? Should you go for the well-renowned DCT or should you opt for the latest addition to the plethora of transmissions, the iMT? Well, it’s time we find out.

First of all, which cars offer both transmissions?

Currently, in the market, there are 3 cars in total that offer an iMT as well as the DCT. Two of them are from Hyundai, the Venue and the i20. And the third one is Kia Sonet. So, these are the cars that you will have to compare when it comes to both the transmissions.

So, which one is easier to use?

That’s a no-brainer. The obvious answer is DCT. All you have to do is put the lever to drive mode and the rest is taken care by the transmission. On the other hand, in an iMT, you will have to change gears at various intervals though there is no clutch. There is no lag in the DCT as well as the iMT.

In short, if you are out there looking for a completely automatic experience, DCT is the best choice. iMT will relieve you from the hassle of a clutch, but still, you will have to shift the gears on your own. Also, the companies offer traction modes with the DCT but not with the iMT. The feature might vary from car to car.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, iMT has an upper hand over the DCT or any other automatic.

But, it all comes to price!

And this is where the DCT might not make a strong point. It almost costs ₹1,00,000 extra if you choose DCT over the iMT. If you have no issues with shifting the gears, iMT should be the one you should go for. And if you are out there looking for the best automatic experience, DCT is what you should be opting. • Hi Yashita,
Hyundai Venue is a great choice also, the iMT and DCT are a little confusing so let me break it down. If you are willing to extend the budget, DCT it is. The DCT automatic transmission offers hassle-free driving and with that lighting fast shifts. Whereas the iMT is a clutchless manual in which you have to shift gears. So, if it is easy of driving you are after, DCT it is. But if you have a tight budget, iMT it is. Hope we helped. Stay Pinned!

  1. Hi Team GoMechanic,

I am planning to buy a new car and have shortlisted on Sonet HTX as my budget is 10 lacs. However I am confused between the IMT (Rs. 10.30 lac/ Rs. 12 lacs) & the DCT (Rs. 10.99 lacs/ Rs. 12.80 lacs) transmission of this model. Although my budget is 10 lacs and the on-road price for these transmission is Rs. 12 lacs/ Rs 12.80 lacs, the additional amount is manageable.

I took the test drive of the IMT and immediately booked it considering it was cheaper than the DCT. Now, as I am in the waiting period, out of curiosity I did a test drive for the DCT too and that has created a confusion between the 2 transmissions.

Need your help on 2 accounts:
    (a) Read the maintenance of DCT cars is higher, can the differential amount be quantified in approx. cost?
    (b) Also, will the higher price of 80,000 & higher maintenance cost justify, if I were to modify my booking to DCT?

Presently I am using a 2010 Fiat Punto travelling to work daily for 95 kms approx., for onward & return, taking 1.5 to 2 hours each side, in Mumbai traffic conditions.

    • Hi Vignesh,
Well, both cars offer tremendous value for money. It all depends on what you are looking for from your vehicle. Where iMT can be a good alternative to a manual transmission, the DCT gearbox offers quick and seamless shifts. This is where your requirements jump in. If it is the seamless drive you are after, then DCT has the option to pick. But if you are looking for a car with a manual transmission, without the problems of a clutch, iMT is a better option. Hope it helps!
