Kia Sorento, Carnival to Enter India? | An Insight

Considering Kia’s global offerings, its Indian inventory seems as if Kia has just started. With several cult models leaving a mark internationally, Kia is now ready to bring two more vehicles to the Indian shores. These are the Sorento and Sedona, a.k.a the new Kia Carnival. Here’s everything we know about the latest development.

The Kia Sorento and Carnival’s Potential Arrival

If media reports are to be believed, then Kia India has silently imported the new generation of its Carnival MPV and the new Sorento SUV at its Andhra-based manufacturing plant. Since there is no official word from the OEM yet, it is expected that the cars will be showcased at the Auto Expo 2023. Currently, in its 4th generation, the Sorento SUV made its first public debut at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. The new Carnival’s launch is also long overdue in India. Based on the response, it is likely that Kia will finally launch both vehicles.

The New Kia Carnival

Internally the new generation Kia Carnival comes as a long (5.1m) MPV that offers automatic sliding doors, with a huge cabin space on the inside. Juiced up by a 2.2-litre diesel engine tastefully mated to an 8-speed automatic, the New Carnival pumps 197 BHP of power with 440 Nm of torque. The USP of the Carnival is the fact that it is offered in 6,7 and even 9-seater layouts.

The Indian-spec Carnival was launched by the OEM in 2020 and is long overdue for an upgrade. With the new international Carnival entering India, the MPV will finally shed its van-like looks and will carry a good-looking SUV silhouette.

The Kia Sorento

The 2023 Kia Sorento SUV is another global best-seller from Kia that offers a huge wheelbase of 2815 mm. Comparing it with sister brand Hyundai, the Sorento is essentially the Santa Fe counterpart of Kia. Sharing a lot like transmission, powertrain and features to a large extent, the Sorento’s USP is the fact that it offers a 7-seater layout. If launched in India, the Sorento could lock horns with the likes of XUV 700, Harrier, Safari etc. While India-specific details are uncertain, in Europe, the Sorento comes with a 1.6L turbo petrol with a plug-in hybrid or self-charging mild hybrid and a 2.2L diesel powertrain. More details about the SUV will be revealed at the Auto Expo 2023.

Potential Rivals

While there is no conformation as to whether or not the Sorento and Carnival will make it to the Indian shores, but if launched, the Sorento can lock horns with the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, Tata Harrier etc.

The Carnival on the other hand if launched can compete with the Toyota Fortuner, MG Goster, and the BYD Atto 3.
