Remembering The Rambo Lambo: Lamborghini LM002

While Lamborghini is known to make some of the world’s best sports cars, there was a time when the brand made headlines when it launched an off-road truck called the Lamborghini LM002. Here’s an ode to the Rambo Lambo.

Launched in 1986, the Lamborghini LM002 created quite a buzz in the market, as it was the first off-road, pickup truck from the luxury carmaker. The Lamborghini LM002 redefined what Lamborghini stood for, and tastefully blended off-road capabilities with the comfort of a luxury car.

While the vehicle seemed a little odd, it was indeed a true Lamborghini in every sense. The badging “LM” stood for “Lamborghini Militaria,” which was the inspiration behind the vehicle’s boxy and aggressive design. What shocked the world was such the carmaker’s bold move to launch an off-road vehicle despite being world-renowned for making performance-oriented sports cars.

However, the LM002 was the carmaker’s vision to bring something new to the market that actually went on to create history and is revered as one of the most unique Lambos ever to be built.

The Looks and Feel

The Lamborghini LM002 offered a rather distinctive style with a tough and robust bodyline and a jeep-like appearance. A tubular steel frame with riveted aluminium body panels became the vehicle’s USP. The LM002 had a massive weight, and an assertive appeal overall.

The cabin was inspired by the Lamborghini Countach, however with a rough and elegant style. Everything inside was made of wood and leather. While there were several leather shades on offer, white, black and tawny went on to become the most cherished ones.

The Powertrain

Lamborghini LM002 Engine

What powered the Rambo Lambo was the same engine that powered the Lamborghini Countach. This was the 5.2 litre V12 engine that returned a massive 444 HP with 368 pound-feet of torque. However since the Lambo tag was associated, users who wanted more power had the option to go for the Lamborghini L804 type 7.2 litre marine V12 engine.

Much like other products in the market back then, the LM002 offered a classic 5-speed manual transmission with a granny gear near the bottom left. What’s cool about the transmission was the fact that it had aggressive gear ratios that allowed the vehicle to start in the second gear! Despite never being offered an automatic transmission, the LM002 with its capable performance impressed both fans and critics alike.
