Land Rover Defender V8 is Back for 2025: Here’s What You Need to Know

Jaguar Land Rover didn’t just bring back the V8 to the Defender in India. They brought back a feeling. A memory of open roads and unrelenting power.

  • Discontinued in 2024, the V8 in Defender makes a return.
  • New Defender’s price tag starting at Rs 1.39 crore.
  • The SUV comes to India completely built-up (CBU)

It’s here in every shape the Defender wears: 90, 110, and 130. However, there’s no sign of a full-price list yet, but curiosity has already been sparked.

Land Rover Defender in India: A Journey from Grit to Grace

It began as a machine of purpose. No frills. No embellishments. Just raw, unyielding strength. The Land Rover Defender entered India’s story not with fanfare but with quiet resilience. A vehicle built to survive, thrive, and carry the weight of a nation’s terrain.

Land Rover Defender in India

  • 1948 Amsterdam saw the birth of the Series I. A prototype, a promise, a vehicle that would inspire a lineage.
  • 1950s: They arrived in India. Farmers trusted them. Industries leaned on them. The military marched with them. They were durable, adaptable, and unstoppable.
  • 1983 brought evolution. The One Ten appeared. Followed by the Ninety in 1984. New names, better skeleton. Coil-spring suspension. Permanent four-wheel drive.
  • By 1990, they embraced a new identity and were renamed to Defender 110 and Defender 90. Names that would become legends.
  • Then came 2009. Jaguar Land Rover officially set foot in India. They were no longer just imported CBUs but owned its space.
  • 2011: A factory in Pune was set up. Dreams assembled piece by piece. Pricing became realistic. The aspiration began to feel attainable.
  • 2016 was bittersweet. The original Defender line stopped rolling. The world said goodbye. India paused to remember the grit it symbolised.
  • In 2020, the Defender returned with its 90 and 110 variants. Off-road capability fused with technology. Rugged became refined.
  • 2024 pushed the limits. Defender Octa launched. Twin-turbo V8. Power, but not just for power’s sake. Purpose-driven. A true beast for the bold.
  • And now, 2025. The V8 in Defender is finally coming back to India. Performance, luxury, and a spirit that refuses to fade.

What’s the Deal with the 2025 Defender?

For years, the V8 was reserved for the fully loaded Defenders. Now, it’s landing the X-Dynamic HSE and X trims. Under the hood sits a 5.0-litre V8 engine that punches out 426hp and 610Nm of torque. All three body styles get the same muscle, the Terrain Response system, and air suspension as standard. It rolls on sturdy 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres.

The 518hp version? Gone. But the 2.0-litre petrol engine sticks around for the 110-in X-Dynamic HSE trim. There’s also the reliable 3.0-litre diesel across all styles, dressed in trims like X-Dynamic HSE, X, and the Sedona Edition.

The Defender isn’t just rugged; it’s a space for indulgence. Heated and cooled 14-way powered front seats remember how you like to sit. An 11.4-inch touchscreen keeps you connected. A panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and 360-degree cameras ensure every drive feels premium. Want more? Add options like a Meridian Sound System, a centre-console fridge, or packs like Cold Climate or Advanced Off-Road.

The Big 130: Spacious Beast

For the family wanderers, the Defender 130 offers both 7- and 8-seater layouts. One comes with middle-row captain chairs that ventilate and hug you on long drives. The other? A classic 2+3+3 setup that balances space and utility.

This isn’t just a car, it’s a decision. An unapologetic nod to adventure, power, and comfort. You don’t buy a Defender to blend in. You buy it to stand out and maybe to remind yourself, what freedom feels like.
