Mahindra Armoured Vehicles: The Indigenous Line of Defence

Mahindra and Mahindra, a company which is known for its futuristic approach to revolutionise almost every sector in India, has been a pioneer in defence vehicles from a very long time. It all started with providing the border patrol army with vehicles to move in. Now, Mahindra has a global presence and is one of the world’s leading armoured vehicle manufacturer. Let’s take a look at the beasts that company manufacturers.

  1. Specialist Vehicle Pickup

    This pick-up truck is no ordinary pick-up truck that you see on roads. It is offered in two versions by the company: Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) and Light Tactical Vehicle (LTV). This vehicle offers ballistic protection of the B6 level. The European ballistic protection level ranges from B1 to B7, the latter being the highest. As a standard pack, this pick-up comes with multi-layered ballistic glass, engine and battery protection, protected fuel tank, fire extinguisher, intercom system, public address system and run-flat tyres (around 50kms).

    But that’s not all, there are some additional options too. It can have gun ports, stealth mode (total blackout body), tyre inflation system, electric winch, screen and windows mesh protection, Bio-hazard kit, blast mitigation floor mat and fire suppression system.

    According to Mahindra Armoured Vehicles, this specialist pickup can be used for counter-terrorism ops like patrolling in high-intensity areas, special forces operations and Quick reaction teams. It can also be used for operations like convoy protection and riot control.
    Talking about the specs, this vehicle is powered by a 4.2-litre diesel engine capable of producing 195hp @3,000rpm and a peak torque of 430Nm @ 1,200-3,200rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

  2. Light Specialist Vehicle (Mahindra ALSV)

    This robust LSV or the armoured Light Specialist Vehicle is a B7 ballistic protection level vehicle. With a payload capacity of 1,000kgs, 30-degree gradability and 6-8 seating capacity, this vehicle surely is one hell of a beast and a problem for the enemies.

    As standard features, it also gets run-flat tyres for about 50kms, public address system and multi-layered ballistic glass as the pickup vehicle. It also gets a tyre inflation system, clamshell doors, air filtration and scavenging system and a gun hatch as standard. There are optional upgrades such as automatic grenade launcher, screen and windows mesh protection, camouflage net storage, blast mitigation floor mat, medium machine gun mount and in-service GPS.

    The ALSV is powered by an electronically controlled, turbocharged inline 6 cylinder diesel engine which churns out 215hp of power @3,600rpm and 5,000Nm torque @2,000rpm. The engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

  3. Straton Plus APC

    The Mahindra Straton Plus Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) has been built in a unique monocoque design. It has got a ballistic protection level of B7 with protection from IED’s, Land Mines and Hand Grenades. In the list of standard features, this white beast comes equipped with front and rear air conditioning. It has a seating capacity of up to 12 people with rear seats being foldable benches. It also gets engine and battery protection, protected fuel tank, roof turret, public address system and run-flat tyres. And for additional options, one can choose a tyre inflation system, blast mitigation floor mats, fire suppression system, remote start an electric winch. For those who don’t know what an electric winch is, it is a device that can be used for pulling and lifting and it is motorized.

    The Straton Plus is built on the Ford F550 platform. It is powered by a 6.7-litre V8 turbocharged diesel engine which is capable of oozing out 300hp @2,800rpm and 660Nm of torque @1,600rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed select shift automatic transmission.
