  • Maruti Suzuki was the first car manufacturer in Indian to revamp its product line-up and introduce BS6 compliant cars starting with the Alto 800.
  • Maruti Suzuki has officially stopped the production of obsolete BS4 cars with only a limited number of BS4 cars stocked up in its inventory.
  • As per the Supreme Court ruling, all car manufacturers are required to clear their BS4 inventory before 1st April 2020. Moreover, the ruling also stated that no BS4 cars will be sold after this date.
  • Many dealerships across India are left with only a limited quantity of old BS4 cars in their godown.
  • A report by Moneycontrol stated that Maruti Suzuki has already started to dry out its BS4 inventory. In fact, Maruti is only left with 14 days worth of BS4 cars.
  • Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director, Maruti Suzuki said to Moneycontrol “We have run out of BS-IV stocks in most of the models where we have introduced BS-VI version. For instance, Alto and Baleno we have run out of stock for the BS-IV version, Wagon R, Swift petrol, Ertiga also do not have BS-IV stocks.”

With BS4 cars prices going on a huge discount with added-on top offers, potential car buyers in the market may think that is it the right time to buy a BS4 car right now. However, many have apprehension for whether to buy a new car or wait till April 2020.

Will BS6 fuel harm a BS4 car?

First, let’s get this one straight. If you drive a petrol-powered car, you don’t have to worry about compliance. BS4 petrol and BS6 petrol have very little differences in terms of their chemical composition. Petrol car owners can relax.

Now, this is not the same with diesel though. BS4 diesel had a much higher Sulphur traces (50 ppm), whereas BS6 diesel contains only 10 ppm of Sulphur which is much forgiving for the environment. But why is Sulphur so important? A diesel engine relies on its injector to ionise the fuel for it to become combustible. Sulphur in diesel cars acts as a lubricant for diesel injector. Using BS6 diesel in a BS4 car will cause the injector to wear out prematurely due to less lubrication (low sulphur). This can also inadvertently increase emissions, due to disruption in the flow pattern of the fuel.
