Maruti Suzuki has finally unveiled Grand Vitara, its candidate for the mid-size SUV segment. It shares the features & powertrains with the recently launched Toyota Hyryder. They are the only two SUVs with strong hybrid powertrains and AWD variants. Let’s see how it sits across the rivals:

Design & Dimensions

The Grand Vitara Launch

Grand Vitara is Maruti Suzuki’s first mid-size SUV and the much-awaited Creta rival. It is a partnership product between Toyota & Maruti based on the Global C platform. it will be manufactured at Toyota’s plant nearby Bengaluru along with Hyryder. It has a bold & modern design with an excellent upright stance and good road appeal.

It is the third longest SUV in the segment and hangs in the middle with other aspects such as height & width. It is more expansive than Creta, Taigun & Kushaq but slightly shorter than the Astor.

Grand Vitara & Hyryder are the only SUVs with strong hybrid powertrains and optional AWD variants. They also have the most promising fuel efficiency due to the hybrid technology.

This duo with hybrid tech offers a fuel efficiency of up to 21kmpl and 19kmpl with the AWD variants, while only Taigun & Kushaq offer 19kmpl with the manual transmission. Others offer up to 17kmpl with their respective variants.

Grand Vitara Features

Grand Vitara comes with a complete package with modern tech & features. It is the first car from Maruti Suzuki to get a panoramic sunroof; it also gets features such as a 9-inch Smart Play Pro+ infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, connected car tech, and ventilated seats, ambient lighting & a 360-degree camera. It gets Suzuki’s global AllGrip AWD system along with the following drive modes: Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock.

This system also has a 3-stage ESP that functions according to the respective driving mode selected & unlike conventional AWD systems, this supplies torque to the wheels based on factors such as road surface & slippage, steering angle & throttle position.

In terms of features, it only misses out on the ADAS safety features that Astor offers in the segment. While the prices have not been revealed, they are expected to be around ₹9.50-20 lakhs ex-showroom.
