Maruti Suzuki was one of the initial carmakers in the country to shift to BS6 compliant engines. The largest manufacturer has already got most of its offerings complying to the BS6 emission norms. But the stringent rules forced the company to shelve its 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine which was sourced from Fiat. The latest model to lose it is the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross.
When it was launched, the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross came in Diesel option only. It was the first model to be offered under Nexa premium but was not able to make a mark initially. Then it got a facelift in 2017 which turned the failure into success and the S-Cross diesel was selling a good 2500 units or more every month.
But the with the announcement of BS6 compliance, the carmaker announced that it will be discontinuing the diesel vehicles. S-cross facelift was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 with a very few cosmetic changes and a new 1.5-litre K-series four-cylinder SHVS petrol engine.
The same engine powers the Vitara Brezza 2020, XL6 and Ertiga. It can churn out 103.26hp of power and 138Nm of torque. The engine of the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross will be mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
There are no major cosmetic upgrades as far as the S-Cross is concerned. It is expected to get the latest SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.
The new facelift will have to lock horns with the Ford Ecosport, Tata Nexon, Renault Duster and Hyundai Creta.
