2021 Maruti Suzuki Swift VS Renault Triber | Thrill Over Practicality?

India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki has finally launched the 2021 iteration of the Swift. Not much has changed, yet it has managed to turn some heads. Be it the minor tweaks or a new engine, Swift has changed for sure. While I was going through the prices, I found a very interesting thing. The ZXI AGS variant comes at a price of ₹7.49 lakhs (ex-showroom). And at this price, I can recall one other car, the budget MPV, Triber. The top-spec variant, RXZ EASY-R comes at a price of ₹7,50,000 (ex-showroom). So, that his how I came up with the comparison topic for today. So, let’s get started!

Size Does Matter!

The major point of this comparison would surely be the dimensions.

Dimensions Comparison | Maruti Suzuki Swift vs Renault Triber

2021 Maruti Suzuki Swift Renault Triber
Length (mm) 3,845 3,990
Width (mm) 1,735 1,739
Height (mm) 1,530 1,643
Wheelbase (mm) 2,450 2,636
Ground Clearance (mm) 163 182
Seating Capacity 5 7
Bootspace (litres) 268 82 (In 7-seat) / 625 (In 5-seat)

Triber surely is wider, taller and lengthier than the Swift, and why not? Renault had to accommodate 3rd row of seats to increase the seating capacity. It also has better headroom, for obvious reasons. When it comes to bootspace, in its full seating capacity, Triber has 82 litres of it while Swift gets 268 litres of it. But when Triber decides to come down to a similar seating capacity as that of Swift, the bootspace increases to 625 litres, which is massive for a car on such a budget.

I have been into the second row of Triber and it is not at all cramped. The third row is the place where better legroom could have been offered, it is best suited for kids. As for Swift, it is a hatchback that offers optimum space. If you ask me, Swift is for those who like thrill in life while Triber is for those who have braced their normal lives.

Performance Comparison | The Hot Hatch vs Budget MPV

Engine Comparison

Engine K Series DualJet 1.2-litre Petrol ENERGY Engine 1.0-litre Petrol
Power 89.7ps@6,000rpm 72ps@6,250rpm
Torque 113Nm@4,400rpm 96Nm@3,500rpm
Transmission 5-speed AMT 5-speed AMT
No. Of Cylinders 4 3
Fuel Efficiency 23.20kmpl 19kmpl

Just like I said earlier, Swift is meant for the thrill. The hatch format with a peppy engine under the hood is surely going to be for those who want to experience the limitless thrill. On the other hand, Triber has a small 3-cylinder engine and vibrations are there for sure. It is not at all sporty in terms of performance. You will always feel the punch missing, and I personally don’t expect an MPV to zoom past every car on the road. One thing I would like to add here is the kerb weight of both cars. Swift weighs 905kgs while the Triber weighs around 950kgs. Not much of a difference here, when the seating capacity is taken into consideration. Automatic transmission (AMT) on both cars are good and smooth.

All this again comes to one conclusion: Swift for the thrill, Triber for family. But there’s much more to this comparison.

Comfort and Convenience

Let’s start with Triber. And with Triber, I am going to start with the second row, a space where your family is going to spend time. Very similar to the MPV king Ertiga, the second-row seats on the Triber can also slide and recline. It gives the Triber unmatched space inside the cabin. At the front, the seats or not the most comfortable place to be in. But you do get ample storage spaces such as a dual glove box, central console storage and much more.

Now let’s get to the limitless hatchback. Front row seats have enough bolsters to keep you glued to the seat and enough legroom. At the rear too, the bench seats offer optimum thigh support and the legroom is not at all cramped. Let’s take a look at the features that both the cars have to offer:

Maruti Suzuki Swift 2021 offers a 7-inch SmartPlay Studio with smartphone connectivity while Triber comes with an 8-inch. Both of the infotainments are easy to use and offer much information required on the screen. We thought that Maruti might add the rear AC vents in 2021, but still nothing in the Swift. Triber has AC vents for both the 2nd and 3rd row.

Final Verdict | 2021 Maruti Suzuki Swift ZXi AGS or Renault Triber RXZ EASY-R

It all comes to your choice to drive the life: is it the thrill or the seating capacity you want. Swift is all about being the hatch and it does the job pretty well. The new engine, not the most powerful one, but still offers a great package. On the other hand, Triber is all about thinking of people around you. To be able to carry more with you on every adventure. Swift makes sense if you still in your youth while Triber is for those who have the whole life planned ahead. What do you think?
