The Spirited New 2020 Hyundai Verna has very recently made its presence known and how will Honda just sit back and relax? Honda India is also gearing up for launch the 2020 Honda City. These two, along with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has had a long history of rivalry within the very popular C-Segment sedan category in India. Both the City and the Verna bring in a lot of features on the table. But, which car makes and which car breaks the deal. This is the 2020 Honda City vs the 2020 Hyundai Verna. Check it out!

The New Hyundai Verna now gets the BlueLink Connected Car Technology with up to 45 features that offer vehicle security and alert, vehicle relationship management, remote access, location-based services and AI (Artificial Intelligence).

Along with this, it also now gets a much larger 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Car Play connectivity and an Arkamys Surround Sound System, Driver Rear View Monitor (DRVM), ECO coating and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Other features include a fully digital instrument console, wireless mobile charging pad that first debuted in the Aura, ventilated seats (front only).

On the inside, the 2020 Honda City impresses with a refreshed new interior with loads of features to play with. It gets larger than before 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, voice command and voice navigation. Moreover, the 2020 City will be the first Honda car to come with Honda Connect app base with a telematics control unit.

Other features include Automatic Climate Control, an Electric Sunroof, Lane-watch camera, Steering Mounted Audio Controls, Hill Start Assist, Rear AC Vents and more

On the face, the Hyundai Verna get the new Cascading grille with LED Headlamps and Fog Lamps, new Tail Lamps and a new set of diamond-cut alloy wheels.

However, with the 2020 Hyundai Verna Turbo, you get a sportier sedan with all-black treatment. A hint of red is also thrown here and there to give a more performance-oriented appeal. The front cascading grille is all black against the chrome on the standard Verna. The chrome bumper lip is also removed from the Verna Turbo. The Turbo Verna also gets front parking sensors which are not present in any variant of the Standard Verna.

The new 2020 Honda City looks quite apart and is sure to brew some controversy. The argument is that the New Honda City has lost its original shape and stance and now looks overdone. The exterior look elongated with undersized wheels. The statement is somewhat true ad the new City is a big departure from the old one and now looks nothing like the Honda City of the yesteryears.

If compared the previous-gen the new fifth-generation will be bigger than ever as it will sit on a 2,600mm which will Honda to make the cabin more spacious and resourceful. In terms of dimensions, the new City is 4,549mm long, 1,748mm wide and 1,489mm tall.

The 2020 Hyundai Verna gets three engine options to choose from;

  1. A 1.5-litre CRDi Diesel that produces 115bhp and 250nm of torque paired to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter.
  2. 1.5-litre Gamma Petrol good for 115bhp and 144 nm of torque mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed CVT.
  3. And the party piece, a 1.0-litre T-GDi Turbocharged Petrol Engine that churns about 120bhp and 172nm of Torque. Only the 1.0-litre Turbo variant gets a 7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) gearbox.

Honda City

The 2020 Honda City will get the usual BS6 Compliant 1.5-litre i-VTEC Petrol and an i-DTEC “Earth Dreams” Diesel Engine;

  1. The 1.5-litre i-VTEC naturally-aspirated petrol engine will see a minor bump in power output (1bhp actually) producing 121bhp with 155Nm of peak torque which is almost 10Nm higher torque than the previous-gen model. This petrol engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual with a CVT option.
  2. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC, on the other hand, will continue with 99hp with 200Nm of peak torque will come paired to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard and for surprisingly for the first will have an optional CVT gearbox as well.

There is also a third engine option; a 1.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit which is only available in the “RS” variant of the 2020 Honda City. This engine makes 122hp and 173nm of torque paired to a CVT. Honda hasn’t revealed anything on this variant and we suspect this won’t make it into India.

The New Hyundai Verna gets 6-airbags, ABS with EBD and ESC, ESS (Emergency Stop Signal), VSC (Vehicle Stability Management), TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Adaptive Guidelines for reversing, ISOFIX child seats mount, Front Parking Sensor (only on the Turbo Variant), Cornering lights

For safety, Hyundai has equipped the 2020 Verna with Passenger and Driver Airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors, and seat belt reminders as STANDARD.

The 2020 Honda City comes loaded with decent safety features like 6-airbags, ABS with EBD, Hill Start Assist, TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) and more.

The all-new 2020 Honda City will also come equipped with a first in segment VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) and AHA (Agile Handling Assist).

The VSA makes use of independent brakes on each of the for wheels in-order to maintain the balance during sharp turns. While the AHA does its works by applying brakes on the wheels to smoothen the curve during corner sliding.

The 2020 Hyundai Verna starts at Rs. 9.30 lakhs for the 1.5 S all the way to Rs. 15.10 lakhs for the Verna 1.5 SX (O) AT.

Honda City

The expected price of the 2020 Honda City is suspected to be in the range of Rs.10 to 15 lakhs. This estimation is also considering the price bump to BS6 upgrades.

Both the Honda City and the Hyundai Verna have been competing with each other for the top spot in the C-Segment Sedan category in India. Verna lovers vouch for its stability and agility and that the Verna is a driver’s car. Honda Enthusiasts, on the other hand, praise the City for its refinement (except the i-DTEC diesel), a comfortable ride and a laundry list of features.

Coming to the pricing, the 2020 Honda City is likely to cost more than the 2020 Hyundai Verna, as it has been always. However, on paper, the new Verna look a better deal with almost all the features (and even more) present when compared to the upcoming City.
