Nissan Leaf VS MG ZS EV Compared | EV Shootout!

Technology in the automotive sector is advancing at light speed. Almost every year we see new electric vehicles coming up that are more efficient and even more environmentally friendly. Depending upon the company electric cars offer different specifications and features. Well, India is among the growing market when it comes to electric cars. Hence many companies are either updating their existing electric vehicles with new technology or are launching new electric cars.

Well, according to the news, one of the latest cars to set foot in India is the Nissan Leaf. The electric car is set to launch on 18th October (Mark your calendars). But this also means it has to compete against its rivals in the country. And according to the price expectations, it is anticipated that it will rival the likes of MG ES EV.

So, without further ado, let us look at whether should we be excited about the launch of the Nissan Leaf. Before getting started, Nissan Leaf is among the most efficient cars on the planet.

Nissan Leaf and MG ES EV, Electric Motor and Battery

Let’s start with the most important component of an electric vehicle, the battery and the motor.

Battery and Motor

Nissan Leaf (Expected) MG ZS EV
Battery 40.0 kWh 50.5kWh
Motor Power 147bhp 176.5ps
Torque 340Nm 280Nm
0-100 Acceleration Time Under 7.5 Sec 8.5 Sec
Claimed Range 240km (Expected) 461km
Actual Range (in Eco)* N.A 350kms
Charging Time with 50kW Charger 60 Minutes (20% – 80%) 60 Minutes

Some people may find electric automobiles to be uninteresting, but once behind the wheel, it’s a very other experience. Since electric vehicles don’t have a transmission, their transmission losses are actually rather minimal. As a result, acceleration times are shorter and there is quick torque at practically all speeds. Therefore, having a strong yet effective motor that could transmit power to the tarmac is crucial.

Here it is the MG ZS EV that is clearly winning the duo. However, there is another iteration of the Nissan Leaf that is more powerful and offers a better range. But we assume the lower spec variant to arrive in India.

Which Electric Vehicle has a better Interior and Features?

MG ZS EV is said to have a fairly long feature list. However, a thing to note is that, unlike its IC counterpart Astor, ZS EV misses out on the level-2 ADAS features. Additionally, we expect the Nissan Leaf to come in its most affordable avatar i.e S trim. Although if the company launches the premium SV trim, it’ll be expensive considering its competition.

Features

Nissan Leaf (Expected) MG ZS EV
Infotainment System 8 Inch 10.1 inch
No. of speakers 4 speaker+2 tweeters 4 speaker+2 tweeters
Ventilated Seats
Sunroof Panoramic
Instrument Cluster All-Digital All-digital
Air purifier
Powered Seats
Auto-Dimming IRVM
360-degree Camera

Both the cars are prettymuch neck in neck and offer almost the same set of features with differences in some. That said, we are expecting the Nissan Leaf to not compromise on vehicle safety. That said, we think this is a comparison of the safety features the car might come with.

ADAS features

In the safety department, both cars are yet again neck in neck. Although, it is the Nissan that has a slight edge over the MG as it comes with some driver assistance systems. But next up let’s look at another important aspect, the size. Because it does matter at times.

The Dimensions

MG ZS EV in India comes under the segment of crossovers and so is the Nissan Leaf.

Dimensions

Nissan Leaf MG ZS EV
Length (mm) 4480 4323
Width (mm) 1791 1809
Height (mm) 1562 1649
Wheelbase (mm) 2692 2581

But considering the dimensions, it is the Nissan leaf that is the longest and also offers a longer wheelbase. This helps to open up more space on the side. On the contrary, it is the MG ZS EV that is wider than the Nissan aiding in better comfort for 3 people in the second seat.

The Price and other Rivals

As of now the prices of Nissan Leaf are still under the curtain. But the top-end exclusive trim of the MG ZS EV is priced at Rs. 25.44 Lakh. However, MG launched its base Excite trim in July which costs Rs. 21.99 Lakh. Prices in ex-showroom.

Also, if we had to guess the price, we expect the Nissan Leaf to be priced somewhere around Rs. 25 Lakh to Rs. 30 Lakh. As far as other rivals are concerned apart from Tata Nexon EV MAX, no other vehicle comes close those these cars. Also, Nexon EV MAX is a lot cheaper than both.
