Yes, you heard it right! Just 1 unit of the Tata Nano was sold in 2019 in the month of February. Tata has also reported zero production days for Nano. However, there is no official confirmation on the discontinuation of the Nano.

Highlights of Tata Nano Sales

• As per filings by Tata Motors, there is zero production and sales for the Tata Nano in September, which makes it the ninth consecutive months that Tata has not manufactured the car.
• Tata Motors comments, “Decisions on product life cycle is a holistic view taken after considering the market developments, regulations and emerging competitive landscape. Any such decisions are announced as and when it’s taken.“
• The Tata Nano was revealed back in the Auto Expo 2008 unfolding Ratan Tata’s noble dream of enabling every Indian to own a proper car.
• The Nano was launched to the public in March of 2009 with a price tag of close to ₹1,00,000 for the base variant.
• Much to Tata’s dismay, the car was doomed right from the start with production issues, major design flaws, critical safety issues and the company themselves positioning the it as a cheap car.
• Officials reports state that Tata has no plans to equip the current generation with a BS6 engine.
• Moreover, there are reports that Tata Motors will discontinue the nano from April 2020, right when the BS6 emissions are mandated all over India.
• In January-September 2018, Tata produced a total of 297 units and sold 299 units in the domestic market.
• As per ex-Tata Sons chairperson Cyrus Mistry, that the car was a loss-making model and he claims that the Nano “constantly lost value, peaking at ₹1,000 crores.”
