Retrofit CNG Kits On BS6 Cars To Be Legalized Soon!

CNG based cars have started gaining more and more popularity in the past few years. The major reason behind this is that the costs of other fuels have been sky-rocketing. On the other hand, CNG still remains affordable, easy to maintain and is also very fuel-efficient. You can easily convert your car into a CNG based vehicle, but only if it is a BS4 or lesser version. Up until now, retrofit CNG kits on BS6 cars hasn’t been legalized, but things might change soon. Read ahead!

  1. Why are retrofit CNG kits on BS6 cars not possible?

As we all know, the BS6 norms brought about a lot of changes that were primarily made to make engines more environmentally friendly. Our little friend, the catalytic converter played a major role in cutting down these toxic fumes and gasses. Now, a catalytic converter is a 100% factory fitted, so only factory fitted CNG kits would have it. You can still convert your BS6 car to CNG, but it won’t be legal.

  1. How are BS4 cars with retrofit CNG kits legal?

Well, since there was no compulsion of a catalytic converter on BS4 cars, they cannot be penalized for having a retrofit CNG kit.

  1. When will this come into action?

The government has officially proposed that retrofit CNG kits on BS6 cars can be legalized. As soon as the government figures out a way of attaching these catalytic converters to retrofit CNG kits on BS6 cars, they’ll be able to legalize it. Now, this could be a challenge, but the government has at least taken a step towards this!

  1. Why not electric?

Apprenhension. This is the only reason we are not going completely electric. India does not have a very elaborate infrastructure to support electric vehicles as of now, which is why people are still sceptical about things like range, charging, etc. CNG could very well be the perfect bridge between ICE and electric vehicles!
