The Safest Cars In India From Different Segments (GNCAP)

Not a long time ago, Indian consumers were horse headedly focused on price as well as mileage that a vehicle offers. But the sentiment has now changed, and safety is being given its due share. In fact, safety is one of the most important factors that must determine the vehicle one chooses to buy.

And with Global NCAP’S (New Car Assessment Program) Safer Cars for India initiative, safety is no more a luxury. And if you are wondering which vehicles have led the way to a safer future ahead, here are the safest vehicles from each segment as per the GNCAP Crash Test.

1. Tata Tiago: The Safest Entry Level Hatchback

   

   Tata took everyone by surprise when it launched its entry-level hatch; the Tata Tiago back in 2016. The Tiago was based on Tata’s Impact Design philosophy and a brand reboot that made Tata motors rise again. Since then, the Tata Tiago continues to be the safest entry-level hatchback in India. Receiving a 4-star adult occupancy, and a good 3 Star child occupancy score in the GNCAP Test, the Tiago is quite safe. Loaded with safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD and CSC etc, the Tiago is the first choice of millions.

2. Tata Altroz: The Safest Premium Hatchback

   

   Another gem by Tata Motors, the Altroz is the newest entrant in the list of India’s safest cars. In fact, Tata Motors were so confident about Altroz’s safety that it had sent the vehicle for a GNCAP crash test, even before it was launched. The result of it all was India getting its safest premium hatch. Scoring a 5-star rating for adult occupancy and a 3-star rating for child occupancy, even the body shell of the Altroz was marked safe. Loaded with safety equipment like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, reverse parking sensors, ISOFIX etc., the Altroz has been a safer choice for many.

   

3. Tata Tigor: The Safest Compact Sedan

   

   Much like its hatchback counterpart, the Tata Tigor too is one of India’s safest C segment sub-compact sedans. The Tigor too is based on the Impact Design philosophy with an added commitment to safety and integrity. The Tigor has a score of 4-stars in the adult occupancy and a 3-star in the child occupancy category. Loaded with standard safety features including dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors, the Tigor is a safe sub-compact sedan with good looks.

4. Mahindra XUV 300: Safest Compact SUV

   

   Launched in 2019, the XUV 300 is a promising compact SUV that has managed to carve a niche for itself. Not only is the XUV 300 loaded with top-notch features, but the vehicle also holds the crown of being India’s safest compact SUV. Having one of the best scores in the GNCAP Crash tests, the XUV 300 shines with 5-star adult occupancy and 4-star child occupancy ratings; the highest for any Indian vehicle. Loaded with features that include up to seven airbags, corner braking control, and front and rear parking sensors and much more, the XUV 300 has proven its ground for safety.

5. Mahindra Marazzo: Safest MUV

   

   Another entrant by Mahindra, the Marazzo is a versatile and practical MUV that comes with 7 and 8 seater layouts. The vehicle isn’t just spacious and feature-rich, but also supremely capable, comfortable and safe. Scoring 4-stars in adult occupancy and 2-stars in child occupancy, the Marazzo manages to provide good safety with a stable bodyshell as per the GNCAP Crash results.

So these were the safest vehicles in India, from each segment. Please note that these vehicles are the actual Indian variants that go on sale in India. Unlike other testing agencies, the GNCAP tests Indian variants of vehicles and not their global counterparts. So if you do not see your favourite vehicle on the list, don’t be disheartened as it is possible that your favourite vehicle was tested on a different NCAP crash test.
