BS6 being the hottest talking point in the automobile industry right now there is too much hustle and bustle in the market. Skipping BS5 the new emission norms are a drastic change from BS4.

The upcoming Indian vehicle owners or present owners have so much going through their heads in regards to BS6 (the new emission norms).
The most prominent question is “Should I buy a BS4 vehicle now?”
Before answering the question lets see the major changes the vehicle will undergo in order to shift from BS4 to BS6.

Transaction from BS4 to BS6 | Change that matters
From 2017 to 2020, reforming the new exhaust emission norms took 3 years. In order to compete in the Indian Automotive market, the manufacturers had their company on stake. As the new norms are way stricter than before. The amount of work that went into developing new vehicles is huge considering 3 years.
BS4 to BS6 updates
Both Two-wheelers, as well as the Four-wheelers, have received several updates be it engine or aesthetics.
Two Wheelers
- The new motorcycles or scooters be it a low capacity (below 200CC) or high capacity (200+cc) both will get an EFI Electronic Fuel Injection) system. This is an update from the carburetor.
- An additional layer in the catalytic converter is installed to filter the harmful gasses from the exhaust.

Four Wheelers
- All the cars will get an OBD (diagnostics) to record and check the real-time emissions produced by the vehicle.
- Alongside that, the diesel vehicles’ engine will be thoroughly upgraded so as to run on the new BS6 fuel.
- SCR is an add-on to the diesel vehicles and more vehicles on road will have the additional AdBlue tanks.
- Not just the vehicles but the fuel is also affected by BS6. The new Diesel fuel now had 5-times less sulphur than before and petrol has a higher octane number for the better combustion process.

Let’s come back to the question
The simple question has a very complicated answer. In simple words, one can buy BS4 compliant vehicles. Even though the old vehicles will keep on polluting the environment. It’ll be a long wait to see all the BS6 cars on road as most of the cars currently running are BS4 and some being BS3 or even BS2. It’ll defeat the purpose of implementing BS6 for some time.
On the other hand, the manufacturers are offering discounts on BS4 vehicles which is the only plus point and kind of mouth-watering.
So buying a BS4 vehicle is your call. It’s only one thing you can save, it could be our mother nature or money. CHOOSE WISELY !!
