The Curious Case of “Special Edition” Cars in India

The words special edition across anything certainly makes the price of that item increase but is it actually worth it? As this is a website about vehicles so let’s look at the car aspect of it and see if the words special edition do actually mean something special or is it just a word slapped across the car to bolster sales. Below are ten special edition cars that were launched in India. Let’s see if they truly are special.

Limited Edition Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Pro

Back in 2012 Maruti Suzuki launched a special edition of its popular hatchback the WagonR. It was priced 20,000 INR above the normal car and was fitted with a double din music system with speakers, seat covers, side mouldings, bumper protector and a rear upper spoiler. It was claimed at that time that all this stuff would total you around 30,000 INR if you were to purchase it yourself. The reason for this launch was during 2012, petrol car demands were not that great. So can this car be considered special or limited edition?

No, the car didn’t have anything actually special or limited. All the things that the car provided, you could buy them from any dealer. These were just made to make the car look good and nothing else. They could have added new features to make it actually limited but all we got was some new decals and a speaker system.

Maruti Suzuki DZire Allure Edition

This came out when DZire used to be the highest selling sedan in India. The allure was available by paying 30,000 INR over the variant you had selected. Similar to WagonR Pro it was all cosmetic changes. New side skirt, ‘allure’ badge on the doors and back of the car, beige carpets, car pillows with the word allure on them and a front centre armrest. There was a music kit as well which comprised of an eight-inch 4 channel subwoofer with 6.5inch speakers.

The point of this special edition was to make the car look better. They could have just have had all of these features present normally and charged the same amount they did including the allure kit. This is another car that cannot be called a special edition because it has no mechanical changes at all. It’s all cosmetic and extra addons which don’t make a car a special edition.

Honda WR-V Alive Edition

The alive edition was a step up from the base variant of the WR-V. As expected for a special edition car the Alive badge could be found on the boot and the steering wheel. Black leatherette upholstery was also added. Alongside these cosmetic additions, there were some extra changes as well. The alive edition features a new Inside RearView Mirror (IRVM) with rear camera and rear parking sensor as well. The Alive edition was available at 24,000 INR more from the base variant.

The alive edition can actually be called a special edition because it took the variant and added more things in it which made the driving experience better. Compared to the other two cars that only offered cosmetic features the Honda WR-V Alive edition can truly be called a special edition.

Jeep Compass Bedrock Edition

The special edition of the base variant, the Bedrock edition features reverse parking camera, floor mats, 16 inches alloy wheels, black roof rails and many other cosmetic updates. It also got the Bedrock branding on seat covers and boot lid.

This is another example of a special edition that added actual new features on top of cosmetic changes. The Jeep Compass Bedrock can also be considered a special edition.

Mahindra XUV500 Sportz Edition

This special edition was launched in 2017. Based on the W10 variant it only got cosmetic changes instead of getting new features. The cosmetic changes included new decals and a different shade of paint along some sides of the car. It also got a Sportz branding around the car namely on the C-pillar and the on the lower side of doors.

As there were no changes on the feature list and it was simply cosmetic changes it wasn’t exactly a special edition. All these changes can probably be done in a shop. Mahindra could have featured a better engine performance which would have gone with the name that they gave this special edition.

Hyundai Creta Anniversary Edition

Launched in 2016, the anniversary edition was based on the already existing SX+ trim. Similar to most cars on the list this one also only got cosmetic changes and no mechanical changes or changes that make the driving experience better. Black painted C pillar and new decals were the major changes. It also offered some other minor cosmetic changes which are kind of done by every single special edition car at this point.

Another not so special car because there were no actual changes to make the car feel special to drive or own. Extra decals and upholstered seats don’t really make a car special.

Toyota Etios Liva TRD

One of the cars on this list that can truly be called a special edition. Except for the normal cosmetic changes, the Toyota Etios Liva TRD gave its owner option of three engines and one of it was only available on this car, The 1.5Lt engine that gave an output of 89bhp. It also got cosmetic overhauls just like the other cars on this list including new body kits. It could be argued that the engine was already available in other Toyota cars however it was only available in the special edition of Etios and not the other ones.

This car can be set as a standard for truly being a special edition as it had features which were truly unique to it.

Maruti SX4 Celebration Edition

Another Maruti special edition car on this list and as you might have guessed, it had no actual improvements over the normal edition. All it got was new colours and some chrome finish around the AC vents and handles. The car was also available for a short duration as they really wanted to add a time constraint making the car appear more special.

It’s not really necessary for the verdict for this as its quite obvious that there was nothing special about this car. It’s good it was named celebration as it allows for an easy joke at the expense of the name as there is nothing to celebrate about this car.

Ford EcoSport Platinum Edition

A special edition made by Ford, the platinum edition added mostly cosmetic changes and a few new gadgets inside the car. 17-inch alloy wheels, blacked-out roof and some new colour schemes. The changes inside included an 8-inch infotainment system and a reverse parking camera.

Another car that can be considered a special edition because it improves the driving experience and not just makes the car only good looking.

Renault Duster Adventure Edition

Launched in 2016, the Adventure Edition is another add new cosmetic and call it a special edition kind of car. It got new seat covers, adventure tag branding and some chrome elements in and around the car. The only features that can be called special was an optional app offered by Renault that allowed you to mark your speed and gave you overspeeding warnings. Actually, after writing this I don’t think it can be considered as a special feature.

The final car on the list and it too cannot be considered a special edition in any way.

This concludes the different special edition cars and how special they actually are. Do note that they’re a lot of special edition cars that may be better or worse than these on the list but we decided to go with these 10 cars.
