BS4 vehicle buyers warned by STA | Supreme Court Verdict

If you are planning to buy a new vehicle and want to spend a bit less, you may have been advised by someone to buy a BS4 model. Due to the BS4 models getting discontinued from April 1, you may think that the vehicle will cost you much lower than the actual value. But there is a catch in this.

If you buy a BS4 vehicle before 31st March and the registration fails before 31st March, be it any reason, will be deemed as scrap. Therefore, the State Transport Authority (STA) has advised that the buyers need to get the new vehicle registered before 31st March 2020. The buyers won’t be able to register their BS4 vehicle under any circumstances.

The state authority has also advised the RTOs to strictly implement SC’s judgment and convey the same to the dealerships so that the customers don’t have to face any hassles.

There’s a possibility that you won’t be able to find BS4 vehicles as most of the stock has been cleared out by the manufacturers. India’s largest manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki has already sold over 2,00,000 BS6-compliant vehicles in the country.

Earlier, the Centre had fixed September 30, 2019, as the deadline for sales and registration of BS4 vehicles but Supreme Court ruled out April 1, 2020, to be the deadline as the manufacturers needed time to clear their BS4 stocks out.

Most of the manufacturers have shifted towards production of BS6 vehicles. In this month itself, Honda will be launching the City 2020 with BS6 upgrade. Last month Tata Tiago, Nexon and Tigor got BS6 updates too. It is advised to the customers to understand the need to shift towards a cleaner environment and should plan to buy new vehicles accordingly.

    • Hi Ratan,
The implementation of BS6 norms was a very tough decision made by the government in order to help nature to revive. After the lockdown, there is no possibility of BS4 stock being available for sale. It is necessary to understand the motive behind the transition. In case any extension is given to ease out the burden on the carmakers and dealers, we’ll be the first to tell you. So, stay pinned!
