Bigger, Better, Stronger! Suzuki 48V Mild Hybrid System

Suzuki has introduced a new 48V mild-hybrid system in Europe that will be more efficient, more powerful and less polluting. What more can one ask for?

Suzuki already has a line of 12V mild-hybrid systems in countries around the world including India where it is found in Baleno, S-cross and Ciaz and now will be working on 48V in Europe for now.

Mild-hybrids systems consist of an IC(internal combustion) engine combined with an electric motor and they work in tandem with each other the engine working when the car is accelerating while the motor working when the vehicle is coasting and braking.

The 48V Lithium-ion battery in the new Suzuki system with an Integrated Starter Generator(ISG) will have up to 20 per cent less CO2 emission. The overall gear train weight is also reduced by 15 kgS which in turn increases efficiency by up to 15 per cent which will give Suzuki a leg up in the competition.

Some might be wondering, if a 48V system is good why not go even further beyond and go for a 60V system? That’s because a 60V Mild-Hybrid system supply will break a Separated Extra Low Voltage (SELV). A SELV is a system that protects components that are present in a high voltage which actually uses small voltages and might fry if high voltage is supplied. So using a 60V will kill your Air conditioning which will be a real bummer when the going gets hot.

48V is the perfect sweet spot that the system can currently go towards as its the perfect combination of being Cost-effective, generating more torque, and having fewer emissions and the system will definitely be common moving forward and will start with Suzuki pushing its cars forward.
