Tata is finally out with its much-awaited hatchback, the Tata Altroz. With the Altroz, Tata expects to capture the already rushed and much competitive segment of the premium hatchbacks.

With a new design and several first in the segment features, Tata surely hopes to acquire a big piece of the market. Although, it won’t be easy considering the fact that some of the best selling vehicles of the country come from this very segment.

So let’s find out how the Altroz looks in comparison to its competitors viz Baleno, Glanza, Polo and the Elite i20.

The Altroz is Tata’s first car based on its ALFA platform which is an acronym for Agile, Light, Flexible and Advanced. The hatchback’s design is already being appreciated and acknowledged by many. The laser-cut creases and a premium yet bold presence is something that might go well with the young audience in the urban settings.

The launch date of the hatchback is said to be January 22nd, as revealed by Tata Motors CEO Guenter Butschek. The hatchback will be available in five variants which are XE, XM, XT, XZ and XZ (O).

Tata has made sure that it complies it’s models to the BS6 variants. The engines used in the two BS6 options are borrowed from the home itself. One of them is taken from the Tiago which is a 3 cylinder 1.2-litre engine, whereas the diesel engine is a 1.5-litre turbocharged taken from the Nexon.

In the feature front, the Tata Altroz is packed and loaded. It has got everything one can think of in the price range. From a 6 speaker, Harman sound system to a wireless charging pad. Tata has surely put in a lot of R&D and tried to meet most of the customer demands in this one.

The hatchbacks, when compared together in the dimensions of the car, have some clear winners in different areas.

Longest Car: Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Toyota Glanza are the tallest cars in the hatchback segment.

Tallest Car: Honda Jazz turns out to be the tallest car when compared in all the segments.

Widest Car: The Tata Altroz is the widest car out of all the hatchbacks.

Wheelbase: Out of all the cars in the hatchback segments the Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Toyota Glanza have the largest wheelbase out of all the cars.

Wheel Size: Most of the cars have a similar wheel size of around 15-16 inches.

Ground Clearance: The Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno and gl have a similar ground clearance at 170 mm making them the cars with the highest ground clearance.

When it comes to engine and horsepower, the hatchbacks are known to have a peppy amount of power which make them powerful and agile. Let’s compare them on the performance front.

When it comes to showing off the power most of the cars have somewhat similar numbers. All the cars sport a 5-speed manual transmission and all the cars offer a CVT transmission option as well, whereas the Polo offers a DSG transmission.

Torque: The Elite i20 offers the highest torque at 117 Nm.

Power: On the power front the Honda Jazz offers the peppiest engine at 90 horsepowers

Emission Standards: All the cars are compliant with the latest BS6 models except the Volkswagen Polo which offers a BS4 emission standard engine.

Most of the companies in the Indian market have started taking the safety standards seriously in order to sell it as a USP to its customers.

Most of the cars have been rated 3 or 4 stars in the NCAP safety ratings. For the Tata Altroz, the ratings haven’t been out yet but are expected to be out soon with a great rating. The Hyundai i20 Elite with the six airbags although might have had a better rating.

Tata Altroz | Is it worth the buy?

The Tata Altroz surely seems like a package to go for on all fronts. The BS6 compliant engine, along with the stylish and bold exterior as well as a feature-laden interiors make it a great competitor even before it’s launched. The final wait is for the price reveal by the Tata Motors and a road test which will prove how the car turns out for real.
