This pandemic is not going to fade away soon. All you can do to stay protected is practice social distancing. Avoid using public vehicles to commute. What’s the best way to do so? Use a personal vehicle! And if you are planning to buy one, we are here to help you. If you are confused between the hatchbacks such as Tata Tiago, Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Hyundai Santro, take a look at the in-depth comparison here. Let’s get started!

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Suzuki WagonR vs Hyundai Santro | Performance

Engine Specifications and Performance

Model Tata Tiago Maruti Suzuki WagonR Hyundai Santro
Engine 1.2-litre Revotron Petrol 1.0-litre K10B Petrol / 1.2-litre K12M Petrol 1.1-litre Epsilon Mpi Petrol
Power 84.8hp@6,000rpm 67.05hp@5,500rpm / 81.8hp@6,000rpm 68.05hp@5,500rpm

Transmission 5-speed Manual/AMT Manual 5-speed / AGS 5-speed Manual / Smart Auto AMT
Fuel mileage 20kmpl 21.79kmpl / 20.52kmpl 20.3kmpl

Tata Tiago emerges to be the best in terms of the performance. Although the torque figures are same for the Tata Tiago and Maruti Suzuki WagonR, the peak torque is achieved at a much earlier rpm in Tiago as compared to the WagonR.

In the department of fuel economy, Maruti does take a lead here, though there is not much difference that can be seen here. It is interesting to know that both Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Hyundai Santro are offered in CNG variants. As for the Tiago, there is no such provision from Tata. Let’s see the comparison of the other two on the grounds of CNG.

CNG Variants | Performance

Model Maruti Suzuki WagonR Hyundai Santro
Engine 1.0-litre K10B Petrol+CNG 1.1-litre Epsilon Mpi Petrol+CNG
Power 58.33hp@5,500rpm 59.17hp@5,500rpm
Torque 78Nm@3,500rpm 85.31Nm@4,500rpm
Transmission 5-speed Manual Manual (5-speed)
Fuel Mileage 32.52km/kg 30.48km/kg

It is clear from the comparison that when it comes to power and torque figures, Hyundai Santro’s extra 100cc does add up. But when it comes to mileage, WagonR would cover an extra 2.04kms per kg of CNG. None of the hatchbacks come with a diesel engine option.

Safety Features and Rating

Tata Tiago is known to be the best-in-segment as far as safety is concerned. It has scored a 4-star rating at the Global NCAP crash testing. The other two hatches in this league scored a 2-star rating for their 2019 models. Let’s take a look at the basic safety features these cars have.

Tata Tiago seems to have more safety options such as co-driver airbag and Corner Stability Control. Moreover, the 4-star Global NCAP rating does add to confidence. WagonR has been improved a lot in terms of safety though we will never know the new ratings in the near future as Maruti Suzuki has decided not to send their cars for Global NCAP crash test. According to Maruti Suzuki, their cars meet the latest BNVSAP rules in India and comply with all the required safety measures. Hyundai Santro seems to have basic safety features too.

Note: All the safety features mentioned above are for the base variants.
