Nissan India had a great chance of retaining some market share in India when they announced the X-Trail’s launch here. However, they have almost wiped that thought off the enthusiastic minds. The SUV launched at an eye-watering starting price of Rs. 49.92 Lakhs(ex-showroom). Indians were hoping for a worthy rival for the Fortuner in the name of X-Trail, but the Nissan SUV is way more expensive than the Diesel 4×4 Automatic Fortuner. The Petrol Variants of the Fortuner tops out at 35 lakhs(ex-showroom). This price doesn’t create any sense of justification for the fact that the X-trail still lacks hybrid powertrains and even a 4-wheel drive option.
Price Comparison of Nissan X-Trail with Rivals
Cars | Price(ex-showroom) | |
1. | Nissan X-Trail | Rs. 49.92 lakhs |
2. | Toyota Fortuner | Rs. 33.43 – 51.44 lakhs |
3. | Skoda Kodiaq | Rs. 39.99 lakhs |
4. | Jeep Meridian | Rs. 29.49 – 39.83 lakhs |
5. | MG Gloster | Rs. 38.80 – 43.16 lakhs |
6. | Volkswagen Tiguan | Rs. 35.17 lakhs |
In the above comparison, the most expensive SUV is supposed to be the X-trail. The only neck to neck rival in terms of a CBU, Petrol-automatic, monocoque chassis with a 7-seat layout is Skoda Kodiaq, which trumps it with its 4-wheel drive option and a whole list of luxury features and feel. The price difference of Rs. 10 lakhs is a nail in the coffin for X-Trail in this comparison.
The X-trail is a big SUV. It is comparable to Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq and Citroen C5 Aircross. The SUV is taller than all these three cars in this segment. It is smaller in comparison to the Fortuner and MG’s Gloster. However, its Muscular face, tall stance, and 210mm of ground clearance will easily set it apart.
- Length: 4,680mm
- Width: 1,840mm
- Height: 1,725mm
- Wheelbase: 2,705mm
Excellent Engine and Gearbox in Nissan X-Trail
The powertrain and the drivetrain are excellent in this SUV. There should absolutely be no complaints about the engine and its efficiency-performance combination. It may look small on paper but it is surprisingly a very lively engine.
Engine: A 1.5-litre, inline 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine with 12V mild hybrid technology.
The engine is a Patented Variable Compression Unit that is powerful and efficient too when required.
Power: 163 Ps at 4800 rpm
Troque: 300Nm between 2800-3600 rpm
This torque at such a low range of rpm is immense and explains the immense pulling capacity of this SUV.
Transmission Type: Shift-by-wire CVT
The introduction of Shift-by-wire will help reduce the rubberband effect while accelerating.
Design and Features
The X-Trail has a tall stance with a conventional SUV body design language. It has an in-your-face front fascia with a split-headlamp setup and a signature ‘V-Motion’ grille finished in dark chrome. The silver front skid plates give it a rugged look. The elevated bonnet edge and rounded wheel arches give it a very muscular appearance. It has 20-inch multi spoke diamond-cut alloy wheels and wraparound LED tail lamps.
