Toyota in August 2020 launched a sporty version of the cult, the Toyota Fortuner TRD. For you to know the TRD badge stands for Toyota Racing Development and is the identity that makes ordinary cars fun. Toyota Fortuner was one of them (Just Saying). Fortuner TRD came as a limited edition vehicle from the Japanese carmaker and now has been discontinued.
Was the Toyota Fortuner TRD Special?
The limited-edition Fortuner came with some subtle changes on the inside and major changes on the outside.
Exterior
- Talking about to exterior, Fortuner TRD featured a differently designed bumper with sporty accents.
- An all-black grille added the macho touch to the fully grown SUV. On to the sides, there were least changes the most prominent being the black alloy wheels.
- This package also includes a black roof and all-black interiors.
- Finally, the TRD badge finished the sporty appeal of the vehicle.
Interior
- Toyota Fortuner TRD came with additional features on the inside. The best or probably the most useful features being a 360-degree camera.
- To add a bit of luxury, TRD sported illuminated scuff plate and auto-folding ORVMs.
- Fortuner TRD also came with an air ionizer, wireless phone charger, TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), Heads-up display and more as an add-on.
Powertrain and Drivetrain
Under the hood, the TRD package was similar to the standard Fortuner. Both the Fortuners come with the same engine and transmission with no change in power and torque output. Talking about numbers, Fortuner boasts of a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine punching 177pd of max power and 450Nm of peak torque. The motor came mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Why Toyota Pulled the Plug on Fortuner TRD?
One of the major reasons for pulling the plus is the price. Offering more or less the same features as the standard Fortuner, the TRD was about ₹2 lakhs expensive. This made the SUV less value for money vehicle. For reference, Toyota Fortuner TRD started from ₹34.98 lakhs (ex-Showroom).
