Glanza vs Baleno

Cross badging has been a trend in the automotive sector since long ago. The most popular one till now was The Renault Duster was re-badged as Nissan Terrano. But the greatest news for cross badging in the Indian automobile industry came in 2017. Two of the greatest giants decided to exchange their car models and technologies.

Yes, Toyota and Suzuki decided to share the platform for some of their car models and have also invested together in the future collaboration of developing e-vehicles together. An MoU signed back in 2017 expanded the partnership to consider a cooperative structure for developing the e-vehicles.

Toyota’s new series of advertisements which say “Toyota Glanza- Hatchin’ Soon” might have crossed your way. Doesn’t that car look familiar to you? Is it already on the roads? Yes, it’s already there as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The Baleno has already redefined the class of a hatchback in the Indian automobile market. Baleno was the car that introduced the segment of “Premium hatchback” in the Indian market.

The first model which Toyota and Suzuki decided to cross badge is the Maruti Suzuki’s Baleno. The Toyota Glanza will be a remake for the Baleno with a Toyota badging. It will come with some new additional features which will make it unique when compared to the already existing Baleno.

The companies have come together for the global market but both the companies addressed that their focus for the initial phase would be the Indian market only. Maruti Suzuki would be sharing its Vitara Brezza in exchange for which Toyota will provide its corolla to Suzuki for re-badging. We can expect other segment models to be shared where Ciaz and Ertiga are in talks to gain the Toyota badging after their companion Baleno.

One of the major aspects that the two companies would be looking at in the Indian market is the widespread implementation of electric and hybrid technologies. Toyota has the superpower of developing high scale electric vehicles with advanced and tested technology. Suzuki’s biggest strength is to develop vehicles with compact structure and powertrains. Therefore Toyota has announced to supply its THS(Total Hybrid System) to Suzuki on a global scale. We already know that the Toyota Prius is the highest-selling hybrid car in the world. This clearly states Toyota as a hybrid superpower.

As of now the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Vitara Brezza sell around 200,000 units per year. Still, the company has decided to trade only 15000 of both cars to Toyota. On the other hand, Toyota sells around 4000 units of the Corolla per year and will be providing 10000 units of the model to Maruti Suzuki for re-badged selling. This may push sale volumes for Maruti Suzuki, riding on corollas already existing brand equity.

This tie-up will be beneficial to both the auto giants. It would help both of them to increase their market presence in the segments they are either absent from or their presence is not significant. This alliance will help benefit the user as well. Their cars will be more price efficient as they claim and will make the technologies accessible to a larger number of audience.

According to the automotive companies, they aim to collaborate in the future as well to achieve a more sustainable approach to future mobility in society, within the legal framework.
The fact worth noticing will be brand sustainability. Both brands will be selling similar cars in the same market. The sales numbers for both brands will be worth noticing in the future.

Toyota Glanza or Maruti Suzuki Baleno, a tough choice to make. The Glanza launches on June 6th and the Indian audience awaits to experience it. Let’s see what Toyota has in the house for the Indian audience.
