Good news! Toyota Kirloskar India is thinking of bringing the legendary Toyota Supra to India. Toyota plans on importin the supercars under the recently relaxed homologation policy.
Toyota in India may be known as the car company that produces dull and functional cars like the Toyota Innova MPV and the Fortuner SUV. But all that is about to change as very soon (maybe this festive season). The Japanese giant is evaluating the feasibility of bringing the Toyota Supra on to Indian shores.
This move comes as a part of the plan of Toyota shifting its brand identity from a dependable work-horse like car brand to a more stylish and enthusiastic one. Under this, Toyota will be showcasing their finest cars laden with the best and cutting-edge technology.
Toyota has decided to import around 2,500 cars under the new homologation rule. The first car most that are most likely to be imported first into India is the new Toyota Supra or the A90. The car is officially known as the GR Supra. The GR stands for “Gazoo Racing”; which is a car that comes from Toyota racing car division. Thee cars are purpose-built for events like the world championship rally cars, 24 hour Le Mans.
The Toyota Supra is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car powered by a big 3.0-litre straight-six engine churning 330 hp with 0-100 kmph in 43. seconds. The new Supra shares a lot of components and the underpinnings from the BMW Z4 roadster. However, Toyota has tuned the suspension, steering and differential on the Supra to make it drive and handle like a sports car rather than an open-top GT.
On the design front, the Supra features a single-seater-like nose cone with an open chin and a front spoiler. The Supra neatly integrates a vertical slash on the outside of the headlight alongwith the bulge in and around the running board and the mini spoiler at the rear.
The Toyota Supra has a cult following across the world. Many thanks to the Fast and the Furious films and the late Paul Walker. Supra-owners and tuners have actually taken the Supra past the 1,000hp mark with all sorts of modifications on the engine, chassis and suspension. The Toyota Supra comes out as a great project car.
When and if Toyota brings the Supra in India, we expect the price range to land somewhere around Rs 85 lakh to 95 lakh. The Supra is already on sale in Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and South Africa.
